Social Media is a great thing. It keeps us close to people who have moved far off. You can keep up with important articles and news, and you can always enjoy some hilarious videos of cats doing something. One thing social media is not for, though, is to be a diary.
Okay, so we can all raise our hands to this cause if you have any form of social media you have vented on it about something. Or we have posted a photo to make your ex jealous. Or you've commented on someone else's post to stir the pot. Here's the thing though, social media isn't to be a place for all your harsh feeling and dirty laundry, and there's some good reasons behind why you should defiantly think twice before you hit that post button.
So fast forward to right after graduation. You now have to find a good job to use that piece of paper you just worked for for about four years. The thing is everywhere you apply to, they ask you for your social media account names. You don't really think twice about is cause you don't post "really raunchy" pictures and your captions have never had to be censored. You wait and wait to hear about the job only find out someone else got the job.
You both have the qualifications so what was the kicker? When you potential boss searched your media, guess what they found? All the ranting and raving you did during your college career. A professor didn't mark your paper the way you wanted, there's a rant. Your roommate borrowed something without asking, and you got mad so there's another rant. That person that was thinking about hiring was immediately skeptical about if you seeing how you act on social media. They do not want anyone on their staff who blows their top whenever something happens.
The potential employer has to think about what is best for the company. They cannot have someone who is always negative on their team. Especially in professions that involve customer service or a large amount of communication, a person who has a track record of a short temper or being rude every time something does not go exactly as planned is not a great candidate, so they don't get the position. So before you make your social media a public diary, think about the fact that one day you will be grown. Is that picture, status, etc. something you are still going to be proud of?
Instead of telling everyone everything that you hate about someone or something, try writing it down in real diary! That way it's all out of your head without being all out on the internet.
