Social media has become a huge part of our everyday lives and you may think that's a great thing, but I'm here to point out some disturbing facts. Although websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc can be a great tool to use for business, people have made it into a way to market themselves.
Many people post a lot of information about their lives on social media without even realizing it. You never know who is looking at your profiles and what they'll do with the information they find. Now, I know the old lecture of "don't post about vacation until you get back home because someone could rob your house," seems silly to some, but take a look at this short clip of a video where two individuals had 20 minutes to find out all they can about a stranger just based off her social media profiles. The results are astounding. (Click on the photo to be taken to the clip.)
Now that you've seen those results, let's move on to some other very important points. Social media can not only be used in a dangerous, stalking manner, but it can also cost you a job. According to http://workopolis.com, here’s what employers say they least want to see in candidate social profiles:
- 83 percent of employers say they are turned off by references about using illegal drugs. (If this comes as a surprise to you, it’s definitely time to cut down on the illegal drug use).
- 71 percent are turned off by posts of a sexual nature. (Nobody wants to see that.)
- 65 percent are turned off by use of profanity.
- 61 percent are turned off by bad spelling or grammar.
- 51 percent are turned off by references to guns, and
- 47 percent are turned off by photos of consuming alcohol.
I'd start deleting those "drunk weekends in Vegas" photos, if I were you. Aside from having trouble finding a job, social media can also come back to bite you on the behind. Have you ever looked back at an old social media profile you had when you were in your teenager years and compare it to the current adult you? Most people cringe when they see the things their younger selves posted, as shown in this BuzzFeed video clip linked in the image.
Now that you've seen these clips, what will you do differently when using social media?
