They look deep into each other's eyes. She's laughing at a joke he just told and he's soaking up her giggles. They couldn't be more in love. They couldn't look cuter out there on the beach. They couldn't have picked a better picture.
What you didn't see behind that picture is the hour car drive they spent fighting about directions. You didn't see him yell at her and you didn't see her call him things you probably shouldn't call your boyfriend. You didn't see him shaking at the wheel as she said things she could never take back.
You explore her entire Instagram profile. She's flawless, photos of her and her best friends. They all look so happy together, captioned with something cute, and the 'likes' flood in.
You don't notice the glare she is fighting from looking at the girl across from her or the resentment she feels towards each girl in the picture for constantly leaving her out. You don't see the jealousy of her friend who is standing back to back with her. You don't see that this group of friends probably won't make it into next month's picture.
You look at her stunning selfie. Her bright eyes smiling at you accompanied by white teeth and perfect eyelashes.
You don't see that she's posting this picture because she's having a bad day. She needed to make herself feel pretty. You don't know how much she hates her forehead, eyebrows and teeth, you don't know how ugly she thinks she is.
I'm telling you all this because we are under the impression that everyone else in the world has it better than us, when the truth is, people are fighting a battle every day. Things are painful and they are not easy, and we have social media to show us a highlight reel of all the pretty pictures in our lifetime. Not every social media post is genuine, however.
Just remember, as wonderful as social media can make us feel, it does not define us. Don't be fooled. What happens behind the screen is what matters the most.
