Standing in a crowded elevator early in the morning has to be one of my biggest pet peeves. I think any college student could agree with me. Most of the time you're still half asleep, had to skip breakfast because you overslept, and you don't really know everyone in the elevator. It’s just uncomfortably awkward. So, what do you do? Pull out your smartphone, and you are saved.
This tends to be the go-to move, and I must admit, I myself am guilty of it. Rather than saying “Good Morning”, or even interacting with people, we resort to checking our Instagram or fantasy football. Our generation has lost all form of personal communication.
As my sociology professor pinned the term, this is a sort of “Social Cancer”, that us late 90’s kids have adopted.
So why are we like this? In other words, what caused this change in social nature? If you asked me, I’d have to blame it on technology. Technology is an amazing thing, and the advancements that have been made in the past 20 years are astonishing, but people are becoming to be so much more interested in their gadgets, that we have forgotten how to be human.
This way of living has not just affected our generation but has seemed to increase steadily as technology advances. Instead of going to the park to play some ball, kids would rather compare their “Pokemon Go” apps.
Times have changed greatly, and this problem needs to be assessed. Maybe this is just a personal observation, or maybe it is a genuine culture change; regardless, in my opinion, as a community we must change our ways.
