During January and February, we're still reacclimating to our hectic school schedule. With the tease of snow days and the dreaded eight A.M. classes, it is easy to become overwhelmed and get bogged down in the second-semester slump, and that's where Snow Daze originated. The University of North Alabama's Student Government Association has an entertaining and event planning branch called the University Programming Council. UPC has created a series of events from late January to February called Snow Daze that will encourage spring and transfer students to get involved and have fun on campus in these dreary winter months.
On January 28th, the Big Chill RSO Fair took place in the Guillot University Center Banquet Halls. The Big Chill consisted of booths of organizations all over campus, such as sororities and fraternities, the Fashion Forum, and the Outdoor Adventure Center. They offered students numerous ways to get connected, get involved, and meet people. There was also free food and free shirts for the first hundred students, which were gone ten minutes after the event started at five o'clock in the afternoon. It was a huge success, and students got to make new friends as they found many clubs and organizations that they were interested in.
On January 30th, there is a UPC Service Day. Starting at 8:40 A.M. and going until 11:40 A.M., buses will be taking students from the fountain to the Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter, and what's better than serving your community by getting to play with cute puppies and kittens? At 12 until 3, students will meet back to partner with Keep the Shoals Beautiful to help clean up trash around the area. This will be a great experience for students to get involved with their fellow peers, but more importantly to discover the countless ways they can help the Shoals community.
Everyone loves ice skating, and everyone, especially college students, loves free stuff even more. During the weekend of Valentine's Day, on February 12th and 13th, the UPC is opening a temporary ice rink in the GUC parking lot. Just have your Mane Card and you'll get in free!
The final event in Snow Daze is the Snow Ball. It is taking place on February 25th in the GUC Performance Hall. It is open to everyone, and formal attire is encouraged. As with the ice rink, the admission, and food at the Snow Ball are also free. This will be an enjoyable way to meet more people. You can bring a date or not, but the main requirement is just to have fun and dance all night!
Hopefully, you've participated in a couple of these events already because they were [snow] much fun. Even if you haven't, it's okay because you still have the opportunity to check out the ice rink and attend the Snow Ball. Don't miss out!
