A (Snow) Day In the Life Of Wofford

A (Snow) Day In the Life Of Wofford

8:00 a.m. - Despite the fact that a miracle has occurred and Wofford College (who has canceled classes for snow only four times since 1854) has decided to cancel classes, your alarm still goes off way too early. You hit snooze blindly before realizing it was supposed to snow last night. You jump out of your bed at a speed unimaginable to the window, where you see the grass still peeking out from underneath a thin white blanket of snow.

9:30 a.m. - In just an hour and a half, you've managed to rally a group of friends to bundle up and make the trek to Burwell for breakfast with you. Despite the ice and snow, you make it there just in time for breakfast with only one quick stop to be mesmerized by the beauty of Wofford in the snow.

10:45 a.m. - By this point, you have procured the supplies you'll need for this snow day from Burwell. For some of us, that's trays to attempt to use as sleds, and for some of us, that's as many apples, bagels and desserts you can stuff into your jacket pockets.

12:00 p.m. - For the brave, the only place that is appropriate for sledding is Gibbs Stadium. Despite the fact that it's no longer allowed, some of us are still going to try. For everyone who gets cold too easily, you're cuddled up under a blanket with friends or significant others. Netflix is streaming on the TV and snow is falling beautifully outside the window. The coffee table is already littered with empty hot chocolate or (Irish) coffee mugs and everything feels perfect.

1:45 p.m. - It's gotten way too cold to sled anymore, so you're making your way back to your dorm to warm up and dry off, your sides still hurting from laughter (or the fence, depending on if you're good at sledding).

2:30 p.m. - On snow days, there is no concept of time, and now, lunch is being served. Somewhere on campus. Probably. Hopefully.

3:45 p.m. - As everyone realizes they're going to lose the light soon, the snow suddenly seems appealing. There is a flurry of iPhone cameras clicking as sororities throw their signs with their sisters and fraternity brothers use the snow to keep their drinks cold. Everyone is having fun and laughing together.

5:00 p.m. - Anyone from the north realizes that this snow isn't actually that dangerous and they're willing to drive their friends who don't know how to drive on ice out to Waffle House and Food Lion (or whatever is nearby that is open). Essentially, dinnertime across campus.

6:45 p.m. - Plans for the evening are beginning to be settled (especially since this snow day was on a Friday). If you're heading for the apartments, you're with your friends getting ready. If you're a senior in the apartments... you're living the life and we all know it.

8:30 p.m. - The beauty of outside has started to fade away as you and your friends get together with whomever you're hanging out with for the night. Or, if the apartments aren't your style, another Netflix marathon with copious amounts of hot chocolate or (probably Irish) coffee.

11:00 p.m. - You're probably getting settled in for the next part of your Netflix binge session or taking a break to rally from an evening at the apartments (or just showing up to the apartments, whatever is your style). Either way, you decide to check your email, and see that your professor still expects the work that was going to be due in class today on Monday. But you don't let it ruin your snow weekend.

Happy Snow Day Wofford!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
