SNBRN (pronounced "Sunburn") is an L.A.-based producer/DJ and embodiment of his self-dubbed genre, Sun House. He's best known for his fun and upbeat remixes and original releases, such as "Raindrops." His unique style, which he calls Sun House, can be described as a house-driven mix of Funk, Deep, Indie, Nu Disco, and pop. However, in our social media generation, it might be easier to understand this genre (without hearing it) through images rather than words. So, in the hypothetical world where we only communicate through emojis (oh, wait, that's real life), SNBRN would describe his music as: "🌅🏠💃🏼🕶🌴🌞🍾🌆".
In this interview with SNBRN, known irl as Kevin Chapman, we gain an insider's look into some of his influences, music-making method, and plans for the future. And if you're wondering why 'SNBRN,' it turns out that Kevin is a real human being that gets sunburned just like the rest of us... and decided that it would make a great alias, too.
While SNBRN is a big fan of graffiti art and photography, he tends to draw his inspiration from other musical sources. He told us that growing up the artists that most influenced him to pursue his musical path were Moby, Sublime, Fatboy Slim, Rise Against, Pennywise, and Benny Benassi, plus a variety of other artists.
I asked him about his music-making process, especially referring to how, as an artist, he must compromise between his vision and fans' expectations. After all, he has 120k followers on SoundCloud, and many of his songs have gotten well over 2 millions plays! He responded that he's always trying to "find a balance of what I want and what the song needs." His newest release, "Gangsta Walk," featuring hip-hop icon Nate Dogg, has been received well, and maybe that's why SNBRN has decided that his next release is going to be, in his own words a "way different tempo than I usually do" and will "[tackle] something I haven’t done before."
He's currently on tour, and will be playing at the Outpost in NYC this week. However, he also plays festivals, and says that his favorite thus far has been Electric Forest, and his ultimate goal is Coachella. So if you can't catch him in the city (because your fake got confiscated at that bar last week, and let's admit, all the best shows are 21+), keep your eyes peeled for him at your favorite festivals! For now, free streaming on SoundCloud should do the trick!
