This may offend some of you, but I'm a strong believer that Snapchat is destroying our lives. Everyone who knows me knows I don’t use Snapchat. The most you’ll ever see me doing is watching someone’s story every once in a while. And, because I hate the notifications, I’ll open ones that are sent to me. But, besides that, I’m just not into it.
Here’s what I have to say about Snapchat. I think it’s a great way to see what our friends are up to and to see the faces of those we love. But, it’s become more of a way to show off the things we want to brag about, the events we go to and the parties we’re at.
I look around the dinning hall and every other person is "snapping" the conversation they’re having, or worse, just a selfie. Imagine how much we’re missing by spending all of our time, split between two worlds.
There’s the real world where we’re interacting in person with the person sitting next to us, or our Snapchat world, where were sending pictures back and forth to people we’re probably no more than a 10-minute walk away from. I know I would much rather prefer to just see that friend in person or just be present at that meal with friends.
Now it’s not fair for me to just sit here and talk about all the terrible things I think about Snapchat, because there are a few good things, too. It's a really great way to share photos of vacations or our time abroad with our friends.
And I mean that front-camera-flash-thing is also pretty great! Who doesn't love being able to take selfies in dark rooms (parties). It really is a great feature. So thank you, Snapchat.
I just feel that we over use it. When we are constantly on our phones and constantly have the app open, it's just too much.
Also, what is this whole thing with "best friends," and all of that? Maybe it's because I don't use the app enough, but it just doesn't make any sense to me, and I don't see myself putting in enough time to truly understand that.
And, honestly, let's just talk about the fact that you can only send the photo for 10 seconds. I understand that in some situations that's ideal, but I just can't stand behind that idea.
So, I guess the point I'm trying to make is that while Snapchat can be great for staying in touch and staying up to date on the happenings in our friends' lives, we should also be watching how much we rely on it. Try putting your phone away during meals. Your Snap-friends don't need to know what you're eating, and they don't need a play-by-play of the party you're at.
