It's only been a few days into 2017 and Snakehips and MØ have already dropped new music. The collaboration between the British electronic duo and Danish singer "Don't Leave" was just released on January 6th and accompanied by a lyric video featuring a moody MØ walking through a tunnel.
Snakehips first released their debut single "Days With You" with Sinead Harnett back in 2014 and gained prominence for their tracks which meshed future beats with R&B influences. Some remixes which showcase their signature sound include "Raury - Cigarette Song", "Banks - Warm Water", "Bondax - Gold" and Kehlani - Til The Morning.
In 2015, they began crossing over into mainstream pop with the release of "All My Friends" which featured Tinashe and Chance the Rapper and continued to gain popularity in 2016, when All My Friends EP and "Cruel" with Zayn was released.
Co-writer and vocalist for "Lean On," MØ has worked extensively with various electronic artists such as Diplo on "XXX 88" and "Kamikaze," Avicii on "Dear Boy," Elliphant on "'One More'"and Major Lazer on "Cold Water" and "Lost. Her second studio album is anticipated to be released later this year.
"Don't Leave" marks a tonal shift from MØ's upbeat, quirky, electropop releases from 2016 like "Drum," "Final Song" and "Kamikaze." Clad with R&B/Pop-infused beats, the song depicts a heartbreak that MØ's powerful vocals only deliver in a way that's too real. MØ shines as the star of "Don't Leave" and the entire track centers around her gut-wrenching vocals. On the other hand, Snakehips' sound and individuality are lost within a generic production. Whether they can transition to mainstream without compromising their style is still a question. However, "Don't Leave" deserves recognition for its toxic addictiveness and will undeniably hype listeners up for MØ's next move.
