Just A Smile

You walk by hundreds of people in a day, but how many people do you smile at?

It's simple, sometimes so that we don't even think about it. I have noticed my whole life that people never smile as much as they should. On a college campus, I see new faces every day and being a very happy person, most of the time, I try to smile at everyone, even if I don't know them. Many people just give me a weird look, but every now and then, I get a smile.

Today, I noticed a young man walking towards my direction, and I made eye contact with him. Before I knew it, he was smiling at me, and of course, I smiled back. It made me realize that I smile at so many people, but it's rare for someone to smile at me first.

Smiling is just a sign that you are in a good place in life. You are happy and you are not afraid to show it. Smiling first thing in the morning is suppose to improve your day and put you into a better mood, so knowing that, I try to smile every day.

When people smile back at me, I feel amazing inside, like someone just gave me a big hug, and said 'everything is okay'. People who smile at random strangers have a special connection with the world. They see the world as an optimistic place, a place where people are nice to each other. A place where anything good an happen.

I have not been myself recently. My trust and faith in the world have been taken away by several people who have invaded my life, and who have left a negative impact on me. I still believe there are good people in the world, but today you can't trust anyone. It's sad to think this way. To think in a world that has created so much good, that there are people who take this good away. People who scar and damage the good and positive people in our world. Why do we do this to each other? We are all human beings who make mistakes and live this thing called life, but why do people hurt each other? They don't have to hurt people physically, but emotionally. Emotions get you where you don't expect it, in the times when you're alone and all you have are your thoughts. Sometimes these emotions eat away at us and we fall into a dark place. A smile from a stranger can heal us and turn us around.

Going through rough patch in life, I have noticed that I have been more negative. I have noticed that people have smiled more at me though. Strangers smiling at me makes me want to smile back and be a more positive person. I have really turned my sorrow into happiness, with the help of a stranger's smile.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
