If you were born and raised in a big college town and you chose a smaller university to attend, you hear the question of “Why didn’t you choose (insert college)?” on a weekly basis.
I'm from Tuscaloosa, and at least once or twice a week since I have moved to Florence, someone asks me, "Hey, why didn't you go to Alabama?" Nothing against Alabama, but I am vey tired of hearing that question. It's a great school, don't get me wrong, but let me tell you a few reasons why I chose North Alabama over a big school like the University of Alabama.
You know your professors.
The classes are small enough to where you are actually able to form personal relationships with your professors. You’re not just a number on a class list, like you would be at a big school. When you know your professors, learning become a whole lot more fun and interactive. You enjoy your classes and get immeasurably more out of the college experience.
People talk to you.
On a big college campus, you see people on the way to class that you probably will not see the next day, because there are just so many students. However, at UNA, it’s common to say hey to the same people day after day because of your class schedules and because there are not a thousand people rushing past you at any given time. Plus, people are just friendlier.
The campus is much easier to navigate.
Sure, as a freshman on the first day of classes, I got turned around a couple times. After a few days, though, I knew how to get to every part of the campus and even a few shortcuts. At a big college, the campus is much bigger and more overwhelming, and I don’t know how I would manage getting around there all the time.
Lions.
It’s just that simple. We have two real lions that live on campus, and who can beat that?
I love my school, and would not change my decision for anything. I am proud to call myself a UNA lion.
