Small Universities Have Advantages

From a week-in freshman...

To All Incoming Freshman,

Do not be afraid to attend a small university. Being a Freshman is hard enough because it is a constant battle between figuring out where you fit in, if you will be able to find your classes or not, and being so overwhelmed with the new beginning that is happening at this very moment. Luckily, I chose a university that not only allows everyone to be involved on campus, whether you're a freshman or a senior, and that is still close to home. I'm not gonna lie, moving out was very terrifying to me because I am such a home body, and at college the professors and staff encourage involvement on campus. The University of Arkansas at Monticello is a wonderful university that believes in the success of all individuals on campus. This last week was "Weevil Welcome Week," and as a student I was able to attend several events throughout the week. It all started the day that I moved in at an event called 'Rock the Clock". Rock the Clock is a get together around a giant clock in the middle of UAM's campus where there is a mechanical bull, photo-booth, and music. At Rock the Clock, all of the fraternities and sororities were there for roll call to showcase some of their traditions as well as sophomores, juniors and seniors to welcome all the new weevils. The next night, there was a paint party on campus and it was so much fun. Everyone had the opportunity to go bowling, go to the movies, and play beach volleyball for free which sometimes big universities will not do. I enjoy my small University where every professor knows my name and I am not just a number. The professors make it a priority to help in any way possible and it allows me to grow up and be on my own but have guidance as well. As a freshman for a week now, I have learned so many things about myself that I didn't know before and the University of Arkansas at Monticello has played a major role in that. I would encourage all soon-to-be freshmen to check out a small university because you will often find they can offer you more than a larger university can, and who knows, your roommate could become your best friend along with several people you meet throughout the events.

Sincerely,

Loving My Small Campus

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
