While watching "Gilmore Girls" recently, I realized that Stars Hollow was very similar to where I grew up. Perhaps it's a New England-ism, perhaps it's a small town issue, or maybe it's a combination of both. Taking place in Stars Hollow, CT, the "Gilmore Girls" follows the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. It's the epitome of small town life.
1. Town Meetings
2. Every Town has it's Luke's
A staple in Stars Hollow is Luke's Diner. Converted from Luke's dad's hardware store, it is the best place for coffee and a burger. Every small New England town has their version of Luke's. A simple place with good food!
3. Crazy Town Events
Stars Hollow's known for their crazy town events, everything from their 24 hour Dance Marathon, a Knitathon, all the reenactments and The Festival of Living Pictures. Every town has their little festivals for town bonding. Mine has Children and the Arts Festival, a Fall Peak festival, a Wellness Festival and of course the annual tree lighting.
4. Unofficial town curfew
5. The Gazebo
Every town has their center focal point. For Stars Hollow, it's the Gazebo in the middle of the square. It's where Luke and Lorelai kissed after their engagement and where Rory's Bon Voyage party was held. It's a spot as iconic as any store or restaurant.
6. The Taylor Doose
I don't think it's absurd to say that no matter where you go, you will find the Taylor Doose of the town. The Taylor Doose type is the person who cares so much for the town, it's nearly suffocating any type of change. Usually found as a store owner as well as holding some authoritative position of the town. As crazy as they may make you, truth is the town wouldn't be the same without them.
7. The Miss Patty
Miss Patty is the dance teacher of Stars Hollow, but she's also the best person to go to for any type of news or gossip. If you need a job, or just want to know who's dating who, Patty is the person to go to. Small towns are bound to have that one good-hearted person who just knows everything!
8. Everyone knows everyone
The perk and downside of living in a small town is everyone knows everyone, and everyone has known you since you were a young child. This means they all are looking out for you, but they are also looking out for you. It goes both ways. When it comes down to it though, they love you.
9. The Luke and Lorelai
What was "Gilmore Girls" without the constant back and forth between Luke and Lorelai? It was seven seasons of "Will they or won't they?" There's always that one couple that everyone is watching to see if they will actually end up together, finally.
10. Town Love
No matter how crazy your town might be, celebrating putting in the first crosswalk, naming you Ice Cream Queen without your consent, throwing a town-wide wake for your neighbor's cat... whatever the case is, it's your town. It's the insanity that gives it charm and is the reason you love it.
