I don't know where you come from but I come from a town of about 3000 people in eastern Kentucky. My graduating class was 75 students in 2013. Our average class size was 25 students. The town I come from is very small and rural. Everyone knows everything about everybody and that's just how it goes!
When coming to UK at first I was terrified because I had only driven in Lexington once or twice but now I had to live here. I didn't know what I was going to do. It definitely took some adjusting to get used to the size of campus and the city. But now that I'm a senior, that's totally different! I can't walk across campus without seeing someone I know or even going to the grocery without seeing someone I know. It may seem like the New York of Kentucky but I promise you it's actually very small So my advice to all you small town people: it's going to be intimidating and scary at first but it gets so much better! I promise. You'll soon come to know everyone and make many, many new friends.
By the way, your "friends" in high school soon fade away. You'll lose contact with them and won't keep up with anyone. It'll happen and that's ok. Your friends that you make in college will be your bridesmaids and groomsmen at your weddings! Don't be afraid to walk around and see the city! The more you experience it the smaller it will become! If you stay locked up in your apartment then you're only hurting yourself because you won't get to see what the city is like or you won't be able to experience your life as it should! I was terrified to spread my wings when I first came here three years ago, to the point I almost dropped out. But now I've made it through alive and I have God, my family and my fraternity to thank for keeping me through and steadfast! It's going to be scary I know, but sometimes you have to take a deep breath and take a step forward! If you don't then you will only fall behind. The world is changing and better things are always on the rise! I can't express enough of how small our campus and city actually is -- Lexington has actually become my home away from home!
I can't wait to see where my next adventure leads me and definitely where your next adventure leads you! I hope you take these words kindly and as advice and remember your small town will always be there backing you up and now so will your big city! Travel with friends, pray to God for peace and always have fun in everything that you do or approach in life! You are a small town kid, but now you're a small town kid in a big ole city.
