A small, liberal arts college was not where I saw myself when I was applying to college. When I thought about college and where I wanted to go, I thought about myself in the biggest schools I could find because I thought that's where I would've been happiest. The best parts about going to a small college are synonymously the worst parts too. Aside from that, I am more than happy that I picked my small, liberal arts school instead of a big state school. It was the perfect school for me, and I realized only after I got here that the small school setting was exactly what I needed.
1.) Everyone knows everyone
If you go to a small school, you know most people at school in some way; you'll see them around or pass them on the way to class everyday, but either way you've at least heard of them. With everyone knowing of everyone, word travels fast if something happens just like in high school, and some people still act like they're in high school.
2.) Small classes
Small college also means small classes. On one hand, this could be amazing to have one-on-one interaction with the professors instead of sitting in a lecture with a ton of people, but if you happen to be someone who sits in the back of the class and doesn't like to talk, well, good luck is all I have to say. When there's only twenty people in your class, skipping class isn't always an option either. A lot of professors notice your absence and will ask other students where you're at. It makes skipping class very inconvenient, but everyone still does it.
3.) Leaving for class 5 minutes before it starts
This is definitely an option when it takes five minutes to walk from one side of the campus to the other. Rolling out of bed at the last possible second and dragging yourself to class is the best part.
4.) The cafeteria workers know you personally
The people who work in the cafeteria know you and they care about you. They like having conversations with the students and even notice when you're gone. There have been a few occasions where they have noticed the fact that they haven't seen me in awhile and that it was nice to see me again. They're all (mostly) nice and love to talk to you!
