With as much research as I possibly could have done, I am broken hearted at what I have discovered.
The Detroit Public School System is running out of money to pay their teachers. If the state fails to receive $50 million by April 8, 2016, there won’t be any pay for the teachers from this public system. This means these kids could potentially suffer and not get the education they deserve.
Please read this article for the details of this issue.
I’m not here to retype an article that has already been written.
I’m going to discuss all the money that is wasted, every single day, that could go to hard-working people, like the teachers of this school system, diversity groups, or people that genuinely need it just to survive.
According to CNN:
$17.8 billion dollars is wasted on sports tickets
$13.1 billion dollars is wasted on video games
Over $70 billion dollars was spent on the lottery last year, according to the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries.
According to USA Today:
$165 billion is wasted on food, around $530 per person each year
I could give you dozens more of specific examples, but I think you get the point. As Americans, we are pretty lazy with how we spend our money. There are many people I know that complain about being broke, but spend their money on useless items such as clothes they won’t ever wear. There are people that complain they are broke, but spend money on alcohol or drugs.
There are people out there that don’t even have a home.
There are people out there that won’t get to eat tomorrow.
There are teachers that want kids to excel that won’t get paid for their work.
I was driving with my family just a few days ago and I noticed there are bridges full of people in tents. Those are homeless people. While you think people have a luxury of living in the “glamorous” hills of Hollywood, those people are starving and cold.
According to the LA times, the homeless population has grown 55 percent to around 12,600 people. Does that not break your heart? I complain when someone has messed up my food order or when gas is too expensive. These people complain they have nothing to live for.
While I do understand that a majority of these people have made these choices for themselves, I find it humbling to remember that a good portion of them did not have a choice. As a young woman, it isn’t safe to help out some people on the street, but there are other things we can do if we don’t feel safe or able.
We can volunteer and we can donate through an organization. You can do your part without even having to put much effort into it. Clean out your closet twice a year and donate your clothes to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Find an organization online that you can donate money to, even if it’s just a few dollars.
Let's not forget that some of these people just need some love. Some just want to be treated like human beings and some of us can't even do that.
You can do your part to contribute even if they are small. God wants to use us to help out when problems like these arise.
