There will be nights when you lay down and fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow. Those are not the nights that I want to talk about. No, let's talk about the nights spent laying awake in bed long after you've switched all of your lights off and set your alarm for 7 A.M. Let's talk about the nights when your head fills with ideas and thoughts that drive you late into the night and right into the early hours of the morning. It is within those early morning hours that we have an array of thoughts that only spur our restlessness. Here are a few of those thoughts.
1. "Did I set my alarm?"
For some reason this question seems to weigh much heavier the later it gets. One moment you're staring at the ceiling in an attempt to tire your eyes out, and the next moment you find yourself double checking your alarms in fear of over-sleeping. Of course, you'll lay back down only to triple check the alarm five minutes later because you'd rather be safe than sorry, right?
2. "I know it makes me sad, but I'm going to think about it anyway."
Let's be honest. We all dwell on things. There's something about being awake when no one else that can make you feel really nostalgic and that too often leads to thinking about things you know will make you cry. Logically, you know that you should try to think about something else, but your 3 A.M. mind disagrees.
3. "I should audition for The Voice, I can sing."
I think we all secretly have this one even during the day. Nighttime thoughts turn into daytime plans, but sometimes we should think twice before making such plans. Everyone likes to sing, but not all of us are good at it. Before you act on those 3 A.M. thoughts, make sure you're not totally tone deaf. The Voice is not your bedroom, and you don't get extra points for that air guitar solo.
4. "What was that? Am I being robbed?"
This one keeps me up the most. Any normal noise suddenly turns into the sound of glass shattering at 3 A.M. You might know that it was just the neighbors, but your mind is always quick to convince that your house is being burgled. Leaving you to decide whether to fight or flight an imaginary burglar.
5. "I'll be productive tomorrow."
Finally, you'll start having the thoughts of future productivity. Now, these thoughts can be both good and bad. Sometimes you'll be able to plan out the tasks you have ahead of you, but other times you'll set goals for yourself that you never have any intention of completing. The great thing about tomorrow is that tomorrow is always relative to today.
These are just some of the thoughts that go through your mind at 3 AM, be sure to comment some of the thoughts that keep you up at night!
