When we first enter college, I feel like most of us learn to value several different skills and come to a deeper appreciation for things once taken for granted.
One such thing that I am sure most college students have come to appreciate is sleep. It is recovery time that is much needed with everything that we have going on. Sleep can be an amazing thing, which is why most college students care about sleep a great deal.
There are several skills that college students associate with sleep. You'd be surprised how easy these may come to some, while others have to work hard to perfect and hone them.
The first skill is the ability to sleep anywhere. I mean literally anywhere. Whether that be a crowded restaurant, a classroom, the library, a parking lot, or the bathroom. I mean it, you name it and I am sure that a college student somewhere has slept there.
We don't take sleep lightly, so if we have the opportunity for sleep, we take it.
Another skill is the ability to fall asleep instantly. Like as soon as your head hits the pillow, you are out. There is no wasting time for these champs when it comes to grabbing some z's. Most of us tend to envy those who have this skill, as we wish that sleep would come so easily.
One other skill that college students have to learn over the years is that of staying awake into the wee hours of the morning. I am sure we all know that one person who is up until three in the morning working on an assignment (I may or may not be that person). Some students have discovered that coffee or energy drinks are the only way to master this skill, but there are Jedi Master level students out there who can do it by pure force of will alone.
Finally, the last skill all college kids have is the ability to have our sleep schedule planned out down to the last millisecond before we are late for class, work, life (you know, the important stuff), etc.
This skill takes careful planning abilities, as we have to be careful not to suffer the terrible consequences for sleeping until five minutes before we have to leave.
This skill also requires intense discipline in the area of dressing quickly without leaving anything behind. Knowing which pile of clothes and papers to search through first will greatly aid in mastering this skill.
If you can relate, or know a college student who values sleep and has mastered these skills, feel free to share your story! As college students, we've got to stick together in our pursuit of the valuable treasure that is commonly known as sleep!
