My Skin Is A Beautiful Sin

A poem by Tommy Cooper

My Skin Is A Beautiful Sin
Chocolate Covered Lies

My skin is a beautiful sin in the world I live in,

you don’t know where to begin.

Some people say slavery started it all,

While others say that didn’t mark our fall.

Together we rise as not only one,

Because today, there is a war out there that already begun.

While I’m out, my family prays for me;

Each day goes by and another black announced dead on T.V.

Another day and we lost that brother.

That day of the funeral goes on and we watch the tears of that mother.

The sad day, she had lost her son through the act of violence.

If one more chance was given, it would have been worth trying.

The next day comes around and other people were killed.

We try to move because we couldn’t stay still.

Another question pops up and we all ask "why?"

As another family stands over a burial site and starts to cry.

Only time can tell the beginning to the end.

At the end of the day, you wonder if we ever going to win.

Many people want us to stay very quiet,

But once they spark things, that will cause crazy riots.

Over the years, I still ask the questions why, what, and how

About how we change what’s going right now,

From the years that others attacked black roots.

Who knew that cops would begin to wave their guns and shoot,

From the years of being whipped and being targeted.

All our books in class try to focus on the past and don’t know where it started;

Details in many books are always left behind.

Sometimes I wish I had a remote to press the button rewind,

Just go back in time and help create a better change.

With that change being made, that price of that dollar for everything will remain the same.

Over the years, we examine the roots within the use of time,

But with black excellence, it’s hard to get through shade and try to shine.

Labeled as a young African American Scholar enrolled in college,

People would rather see me buried wearing a black tie and a white collar

Instead of obtaining the power of knowledge.

With the tears I’ve shed through the terrible weather we all walk through,

Praying is the only answer that we all can only do.

Continuously, they want to use the shovels and rods to keep us out.

If we stand next to God, him and us together will have us stand out,

On the daily, there is a battle within and throughout.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
