Being a college commuter is a challenge, especially if you live a considerable distance from campus. Even if you live closer than 45 minutes, I'm pretty sure any commuter can relate to these 6 problems.
1. Messy Hair and Massive Eye Circles.
If you're anything like me, hearing your alarm go off at an ungodly hour is the bane of your existence. Of course, I live 45 minutes away from campus and I have an 8 a.m class (I know, I'm crazy), but still. Just like any other college student, even 9 and 10 a.m. is pretty early, considering you stay up until 3 a.m. watching Netflix...I mean doing homework. So that sleep deprived slob in your 8 a.m. class? Yeah, probably me.
2. Bags, bags and more bags.
Bookbag, lunch bag, purse, (or man purse), wallet...the list goes on and on. A commuter's backpack is usually going to be stuffed full because we're paranoid that we might leave something important at home. So we just bring everything. I often have trouble lifting my backpack high enough to hook on my shoulders. I do have five classes worth of books in there, though.
3. Our Cars are Disaster Areas
Okay, so I know a lot of people have dirty cars, but commuters have a good excuse! Most of our time is spent driving back and forth to and from school, work and home. Ever parked next to someone and just happen to glance down in their car? If you come across a commuter's car you're going to see textbooks, loose papers, fast food bags, clothes, shoes and a multitude of other things. The exterior of the car is also probably covered in about an inch of mud and grime too, but come on, ain't nobody got time or money (or energy) to clean their car every week. So if you come across my car, I'm sorry, I'll clean it eventually.
4. We're Anti-Social
It's a lot easier to get to know people when you live on campus. Of course, you have a few friends here and there, but usually we aren't part of sororities/fraternities or large clubs. Generally, I would say commuters are okay with going to school, getting business done and going the heck home. Socializing is for people who don't have a 45 minute drive back to their bed, which is the first place commuters go when they get home.
5. We Eat Anything We can get our Hands on.
I could pack lunch, but then I'd have to go grocery shopping, and get up even earlier to pack it. How about no. So fast food, campus restaurants and that pack of crackers we found in our backpack from two weeks ago is all fair game. Yeah...it's easy to say we are not the calorie-counters on campus.
6. Schedule Gaps
Yes, its just wonderful to have 3 hours in between each class. Not. Sure, we get homework done but we also spend a lot of our time twiddling our thumbs and people watching in the library.
