6 Songs For Coming Out

The music that comforted and encouraged me during a difficult time.

6 Songs For Coming Out
Richard Byers

Always keep in mind, being gay does not define you as a person, it’s just an aspect of the many contributions that make you the beautiful person you were always meant to be!

If you have been thinking about coming out for some time now, I would like to offer you a list of songs that really helped me through the process. Some are cheesy, some made me cry, all were impactful in one way or another. I know the decision is completely up to you for what you want in your life. I hope this helps comfort your thoughts and helps with whatever you’re going through.

I also realize my experience is different from everyone else’s. I don’t want to make assumptions about your life and the people in it. All I hope to accomplish is the idea that if you decide to come out, you will have people who are there for you, who love you, and you can always count on music that can speak to you.

1. "Hold Each Other" – Great Big World

“I can’t remember where I’m from. All I know is who I’ve become. That our love is just begun.”

While the beginning of this song is about a heterosexual relationship, the second verse and chorus sing of a man having a man in his life who helps him through all the hard times. While a relationship is not in any means necessary for coming out, this song is definitely encouraging in that it gives you a sense of what type of relationship is waiting for you on the other sides of the door to that closet!

2. "Take Me or Leave Me" - "Rent," the musical

“Take me for what I am, who I was meant to be, and if you give a damn, take me or leave me.”

In this powerful duet by a lesbian couple in a musical about homelessness, aids, and homosexuality in New York City, one can get the sense of what truly is unconditional love. Stick it to everyone else; be true to you and let them know if they don’t accept you, you have no room for them in your life.

3. "Let It Go" - "Frozen," Elsa

“Don’t let them in, don’t let them see, be the good girl you always have to be. Conceal, don’t feel. Don’t let them know. Well, now they know.”

While this song is probably the last song you ever want to hear again, it’s a wonderful message to how freeing it can be once you let people know you like the same sex. You can truly let go of the secret you have been keeping. Other's expectations of you are not what define you.

4. "Land of Lola" - "Kinky Boots," Lola

“No need to be embarrassed. I like being looked at. And, you like to look. I know a way to make us both happy!”

A wonderful drag queen belts out lyrics that shows one how fun it is to accept yourself. That truly is the first step. She’s confident and real. Also, this kind of song simply shows how fun it is to be gay! We have loads of fun and the drag performances are to die for.

5. "La La Latch" - Pentatonix

“I'm turning up the volume when you speak. If my heart can’t stop it, I find a way to block it. I go la la.”

Let’s be real. Coming out is not easy, but in this song, you can learn to shake of the haters and stay focused on doing what you know is best for yourself.

6. "Who Says?" - Selena Gomez

“When it comes to me, I wouldn’t want to be anyone else.”

“I’m no beauty queen; I’m just beautiful me.”

“Who says you’re not perfect? Who says you’re not worth it? Who says you’re the only one that’s hurting? Trust me, that’s the price of beauty.”

“You’ve got every right to a beautiful life.”

This ENTIRE song is so, so good. If you listen to no other songs, please listen to this one and feel encouraged. Feel loved. Feel free to always be the person you want to be!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
