My Sisters are Not My Friends

And I wouldn't change It.

My Sisters are Not My Friends
Krysteen Ribeiro

My sisters are not my friends. Plain and simple.

Friends let you mess up for the laughs. Friends don't have to tell you what is going on behind your back. Friends just might give you general advice. Friends are too scared to hurt your feelings. Friends are too scared to act weird. Friends judge if you act weird yourself. Friends are not obligated to help you. Friends are not stuck with you; they can walk away. You never see your friends for months at a time. Friends are not too capable to read your body language. They cannot tell if something is wrong. And sometimes, your friends might not care if something is wrong. Friends are too easy to lose.

Friends might want to watch you crash just for a laugh or two. Friends are capable of sabotaging your plans. They do not have to worry if you made it to school on time. Friends don't have to ask you to let them know if you got home safe. Friends are easily replaceable, and to them, so are you. Friends don't have to appreciate your existence. Friends don't always compliment you, or go out their way to make you laugh. Friends don't worry about praying for your life and happiness.

Friends may check in on you once a year, if you're lucky. Friends do care about telling you the truth, which means that they don't tell you anything. Friends might not care if you fall. And they might not care if you explode. Friends don't have to ask why you are crying. Friends were not there when you were born. They don't know you, inside and out. And sometimes they won't care to. Friends are not close enough to criticize you, for your benefit. Friends do not have to know about your quirks and hobbies. And they don't have to support your future either.

Friends are a dime a dozen. Friends are not memorable. Friends are not 24/7. They may be nice all the time. But don't be surprised if friends stab you in the back. Friends would rather talk about themselves than to listen about your day. They don't care if you're too quiet. Friends expect you to be their support, but they can walk away when you are struggling to stand. Friends will congratulate you on your success and blessings with a smile and clenched teeth. Friends can sabotage you and take it from you. They sometimes might not care how much you deserved and earned the blessing either. Friends don't have to be happy for you.

You see, friends are not obligated to be decent human beings. But, you can leave them. However, friends might not care if you're alone and hurt to care.

That's why I don't mind that my sisters are not my friends.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
