Growing up, one of my favorite movies was The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, a movie based off of the book written by Ann Brashares. When the book became a movie in 2005, it quickly came to be one of the most pivotal comedy, drama and coming-of-age movies for any girl, The story follows four best friends, all of whom miraculously fit into the same pair of jeans perfectly. Through times of triumph, heartbreak, love and despair, the jeans gave the girls a sense of comfort while they parted ways for the summer. As a little girl, I always wanted a story to share like this but unfortunately, an opportunity never presented itself. Now that I have started college and I have wonderful suite mates, the opportunity finally came.
During one morning in the dorm room, one of my roommates was looking through her closet and stated that she no longer wanted one of her dresses and gave it to some of us to try on. The dress is teal green and black and figure hugging. My suite mates and I, just like the girls in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, are of all different shapes, sizes, ethnicities and personalities. When each of us tried this dress on, it flattered us each in a way that suited us. For some of us, it gave us the confidence to walk around in body hugging dress, and for others, it just felt good to be wearing a dress that looked that great on. As I was watching my suitemate Kate prance around with a whole new attitude I had never seen from her, I realized that this dress was our version of the pants.
Although it is just the beginning for us, this dress is going to go through the same memories the pants did. In the movie, the girls felt safe whenever they were in the pants, knowing that they had a piece of the other girls with them. With this dress, we all know that we will be safe and will have all the confidence in the world. This is how our story of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Dress will begin and I can't wait to see how it ends. This dress is going to see times of triumph, despair, heartbreak and love and I am so happy that I am finally going to live out my childhood dream of having my own version of this story.
