An Open Letter To My Little Sister

Dear little sis,

I have expressed it to you so many times how proud I am of you. But let me say it again: I am beyond proud of you. Even though I was more interested in mom’s hospital bracelet than you when I first met you, I have loved you so much since the day you were born. As your big sister, seeing you grow up is rewarding but also hard. While I want you to grow up, I also want you to stay my baby sister.

You are about to embark on one of the biggest journeys of your life, of which I cannot wait to see. In June you will be graduating high school. Where did the time go? It seems like a few months ago that was me and you were just finishing up your first year of high school. I remember the happiness I felt that I would be leaving home. I also remember the sadness I felt that I would be leaving home. My last semester of high school flew by. Which I am sure yours will do, too. Read this slowly and carefully… do not wish for time to go by faster, enjoy the time you have with Mom and Dad and at home.

Your life is about to change. It is not going to be easy but it will be the best learning experience of your life. However, you need to enjoy the time you have right now. You have about nine months at home and in the nine months you will go to prom, get confirmed, take your last high school tests, decide where to go to college, leave home, move someplace new and so much more. It is going to go by so much faster than you think. Slow down and take some time to have dinner with Mom and Dad. Especially Daddy, he’s gonna miss you so much! And build better friendships with your high school friends, because you need friends when you come home. Enjoy the time you have with your amazing boyfriend. Go hang out with Grandma.

You have easily had a better experience in high school than I ever did. Whether it’s your friends or your grades, you are much more successful than I am. It makes me wish I had that in high school but it makes me happy that you do. We may have been through a lot over the past few years but you are so strong. There are days when you drive me insane but I will always love you more than anything. I mean, you are the one who will have to deal with me our entire lives.

As you make your decision on where you are going to go to college please know that wherever you go I will support you. Whether it be that school in College Station, San Marcos, Denton or Lubbock (Wreck ‘Em) I will always support you. I will be here to give you the advice you need, while trying to not be biased. Trust that God is sending you to the right place. Remember to trust God no matter what happens in your life. When you are picking out your prom dress you better FaceTime me in because we both know that I have to approve of it. And the day you choose your dorm room colors, tell me, because I need to help you decorate.

I am so proud of everything that you have accomplished over the past three and a half years. As your big sister, I wish I could have gotten some of that success. You will make big changes in this world. I will always be a phone call away when you need the advice. Or maybe just five minutes away, if you choose the right school. No pressure, but wreck ‘em. On the real though, I will be supportive of you more than anyone else. Enjoy the next few months that you have at home, you will want it back when you’re gone. Finally, slow down, enjoy this time and don’t grow up too fast. I love you more than anything.

Much love,

Your big sis

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
