Okay, I know I'm not the only girl out there who agrees when I say that mermaids are just awesome, and I kind of wouldn't mind living out life as one. I mean, what's not to love? Fabulous hair, endless oceanic friends, and a free seashell bra. Anyways, you're in luck and can fulfill your dream at an actual mermaid school.
A story just popped up recently about Singapore opening its first mermaid school, where you can learn how to swim like a mermaid (tail included, obviously) as well as explore their mythology and culture.
The article goes more in depth, with a play-by-play of the lessons learned while attending the school. The first lesson starts with "mermaid theory." It all sounds pretty nerdy and ridiculous, but don't you tell me that you're not secretly looking this place up right now.
In addition to learning all the ins and outs of being a mermaid, the school is a place for all of the students to come together and bond over something they are all passionate about: being a freakin' mermaid.
So obviously, Singapore is a bit of a trip to be making. Luckily, Los Angeles is offering classes as well. Although it isn't the full-fledged academy, you can still get a little insight. The class is held during the months of June and July andis apparently taught by those who have played mermaids on-screen.The classes are suitable for any age and are taught by professionals.
To make the whole thing even crazier, once you've mastered the whole mermaid thing, you can apply to be a professional mermaid at a theme park in Florida called Weeki Wachee Springs. For the last 70 years, it has been known as the "home" of mermaids. The fact that that's even a thing is ridiculous, but to each their own. Apparently, you have to be amazing to even get accepted. The company's public relations manager, John Athanason, said "We have a lot of girls who audition, and very few of them would actually make it." Allegedly, of the 50 women who attended the latest audition, only two were accepted. Mix that with colder spring weather, heavy currents, and wildlife, and then it doesn't sound too appealing anymore.
We'll leave all that to the die-hard professionals, but I'll just keep dreaming.
