Don't you forget about me. I won’t, at least not until Monday. We like to pride ourselves to be an inclusive high school community. But, we still are the breakfast club. All of us will talk to each other on the weekend but never in school or any other public place. The events in the movie were exaggerated but they had one point right, no clubs talk to one another.
We meet our neighborhood friends at a young age, some even turn into our best friends through 8th grade. But the second high school hits, the labels are set up and you never talk during school hours. These are the friends you almost lose a few times.
We got the jocks and jockettes. They play sports and the only muscle they don't use is their brain. Or so you think. Take the jock who likes math, he is really good and receives A’s on all his tests but the second his friends ask “how did you do?”, he lies and says a C. He would never admit his liking of school to his friends. He says a C, so he can still play in Friday's game.
The so-called nerds of the school can't throw a football can they? Well, he is outside in the yard with dad throwing and catching making moves around for fun. It's how he blows off steam. He played ball when he was younger and wishes he still could but decided he loved building rockets with the engineering club more.
Take the theater kid. He can sing, he can dance and convince you to that he is the character. What happens when he wants to go to the football game on Friday? His theatre friends laugh and invite him to a show elsewhere. What does he do find a new group or miss out on that football game?
Here comes the tricky part. What do you do when you consider yourself a part of both groups. I’m an honors student so I should be studying all weekend, but i'm also a three-sport athlete so should party and goof off right? Sure people know that i am a part of both groups but to the nerds I would say "it's just for college, they like extracurriculars” to the jocks I say “I do it to keep the team's GPA up and get me into college to run”. So the dilemma is this, I love my sport i'd do it all the time every day if I could but i also like school and learning everything i can. Which friends do I hang out with on the weekends? The jocks, the theater geeks, the nerds or my childhood best friend?
So here we are, the end of the breakfast club, detention is over, they get ready and leave. The final words are said and they are true. Everyone has a part of every club or personality everyone else has. We all want the same basics, to be appreciated by someone and to be good at what you do. Even in the 80s,groups did not talk outside the weekends. Let's make a sequel. But before we do, let's change who we are so we never again have to say “don't you forget about me”.
