You know you are, if you've decided to open this article. For many of us, there is nothing half as wonderful as buying a new soundtrack and listening to it for days; scrolling through Instagram using the hashtag #broadway or #playbill to see what people are currently seeing; or, most obviously, sitting down in a cushioned chair inside of a theater, perusing your playbill, and waiting more than anxiously for the performance to begin. There is nothing like live performances, where everything is done in one take, and actors are baring their vulnerabilities for all to see. It is in the moment, evocative, poignant and memorable. I have been fortunate to join the leagues of theater-heads, because I have been so moved by the music, the words and the performances under theater's umbrella. It's become an obsession to say the least, but one I'm proud to hold and one that will keep me coming back for the rest of my life. Here are some signs that you, too, are one such person.
You put on one-person musicals in the bathroom. Every character and their mother: starring you. Directed and produced by you. Mis-sung lyrics and notes possibly out of your range done by you. Lots of pride that is also yours.
Anytime after you've witnessed live theater, and someone asks how *insert show here* was:
Literally at any time. It could be a few hours later, or a few years later, and you'll still feel the same:
Truly, there is nothing like it. Theater tests the wide range of human emotion, puts it all out on the table for you and forces you to confront it. There will always be lots of laughter, lots of smiles, lots of tears, and lots of flip flopping between them. It's amazing, and you know it.
You've got your priorities in line.
Well, it's true. (I type as I sniffle over the opening lines)
Hours are spent on Playbill.com, BroadwayWorld.com, Broadway.com, etc., because you need to keep up on all current events! New shows? Kelli O'Hara is doing what now? Who's taking over for the lead in the "Book of Mormon?!" Revivals?!
All musical selections are show tunes. Whether you're pumping yourself up for the day, jamming in the car with friends or getting ready for some good old karaoke, you'll pull out all theatrical stops.
And you welcome your friends to the dark side. They were lost, but there can be no more fear as you've so kindly found them and brought them along with you. Really, they didn't live until today.
Many things that come out of your mouth are theatrical puns. As exemplified above. And below. And always.
I'm just getting started.
One of your favorite hobbies is analyzing soundtracks. Listening to a show on repeat, discovering symbols, motifs and subtle ideas that appear throughout the soundtrack releases many an endorphin. It's a lovely realization to come to, and to celebrate.
And there is nothing that gives you more butterflies or excitement than seeing a show. It makes you feel so alive, and on seeing the marquis you're immediately touched by that magic. For you, it's already begun.
What are you waiting for? Show, show, show!
