"Keys kids" are the coolest kids you'll know. "You're from the keys?! That's awesome!" Yes, it is! Growing up in the Florida Keys is a unique way of life - always has been. It's a place that is just a hop-skip and jump away from Cuba, which is closer to us than the nearest Wal-Mart. It's an escape from reality; a little place different from the rest of Florida.
Not only do you have the Cuban culture, but you have the island escapism style of living all mixed into the American way of life to create a melting pot of a laid-back lifestyle. There are several unique signs that show you grew up where people love to vacation.
1. You drink Cuban coffee on a regular basis:
Let's face it, without coffee you just don't feel human. Cuban coffee is the only type of coffee that can wake you up and get you through your day. Cafe con leche is a great start in the morning and a thimble-sized cafecito or colada will keep you going.
2. You run on island time:
It's a laid back community because it's a vacation destination. Locals tend to have the same mentality as the tourists do. It's normal for businesses to open up around 9 o'clock-ish.
3. Boating is a lifestyle:
Since we're surrounded by water, the majority of the houses are built on canals that connect us directly to the ocean. By living so close to the ocean, owning a boat is a common thing - like a second car. Boating is a lifestyle that we cherish.
4. The ocean is your backyard:
By living in the Keys, you are by the water 24/7. Every time you look out your window, drive down the road or walk outside - the ocean touches your senses. It's always there, even if you don't notice it. You fall in love with the smell of the ocean and the sound of the waves; it sticks with you forever.
5. Sandals all year round:
The weather changes from hot to comfortable throughout the year. It's perfectly acceptable to wear sandals all year round, no matter the occasion. Sometimes you even have a couple pairs stashed in your car for emergencies.
6. Christmas on the beach:
Your Christmas card is different from all the traditional ones. Instead of wearing sweaters and gathering around the Christmas tree, you're posing in front of a palm tree. Your only worry is wondering if you put on enough sunscreen. We love to decorate our palm trees with Christmas lights.
7. You're Proud to be a Conch:
It's pronounced "KONK" not "conche." If you weren't born a Conch - don't worry - you can become a "Fresh-Water Conch" by living in the keys for a minimum of seven years.
