When I think about my childhood, I think of all the happy memories I was able to make. Whether it was going on family vacations or playing outside with my SkipIt, there never seemed to be a dull moment. I can't forget to mention all of the perks (maybe struggles too) that came along with being raised in a foreign household. The best part is I would not change a thing because it was the most loving environment with an endless amount of happiness! Here are some signs that you probably can relate to if you grew up in a foreign household.
1. A majority of your summer vacations were spent in "the homeland."
2. Your Friday, Saturday and Sunday consisted of the usual weekly family gathering at your house.
3. Your lunch was never the typical PB&J sandwich.
4. Birthday parties included at least 50 of your extended relatives.
5. School was extremely important.
6. You probably have some sort of souvenir with your home country's flag on it around the house.
7. Fighting over who will pay for the check was a common occurrence at family dinners.
8. They never understood that you were full and insisted that you eat more.
9. When your American friends would ask you to teach them how to say something, it normally was a swear word.
10. You stood outside for 20-plus minutes (after you said your goodbyes) waiting for your parents to finish their conversation.
11. Being half an hour late to something meant you were early.
12. A typical conversation used a combination of English and your foreign language with your parents.
