Signs You Have Returned Home To The City

It's nice to return to somewhere where something is always happening.

I have completed a year at Denison! A year of homework, a year of tests, a year of the hill, and a year in Granville. Granville may be a cute storybook town, but sometimes a storybook is just too short of a read. I’m excited to return to my novel of a city. Here are some signs that may be familiar to those of you returning home to the City as well.

1. You are lost in a sea of people.

There are few awkward encounters with acquaintances from high school.

2. You are reminded of the concept of 24/7.

You will never have empty cravings at 3 a.m. New York may be known as the city that never sleeps, but it sure is easier to stay up in any city when compared to a small town.

3. You don’t necessarily have to drive everywhere.

Whether you can easily walk to the grocery store or you want to skip the hassle of parking and take an Uber, use public transportation, or bike instead, you will often find your car parked at home more than not.

4. Downtown

Every city has their own downtown. It’s almost second nature to suggest somewhere downtown when planning an outing with friends.

5. You might not know your neighbors.

With both parties often caught up in the fast-paced environment of city life, there isn’t always time to have a “friendly neighbor” relationship with the people who live close to you.

6. You're reluctant to leave.

Everything you need is here, why would you want to leave the city limits?

7. You have a lot of trouble deciding where to eat.

There are SO MANY options.

8. Your job and internship opportunities are plentiful.

Okay, so maybe plentiful is overstating it. However, there are certainly many more opportunities in the city than a small town.

9. You have to consider traffic for all trips.

City traffic makes small town traffic look like a simple red light. Depending on what time of the day it is, you may have to expect to be in park on the highway.

10. Boredom is minimized.

Just like there are so many places to eat, there are so many things to do. You can probably find something new to do every time you’re bored.

11. The Skyline

There may be too much light pollution to see the stars, but it’s easy to forget about that when you look at the skyscrapers lighting up the city every night.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
