10 Ways The Rest Of The World Knows You're An Education Major

All future teachers have these traits in common

Last semester, I did my first placement in a high school. Upon meeting more education majors I realized that there are universal traits that define education majors, especially those who are placed in schools.

1. You call your students "my kids"

Many times I've said the phrase "my kids," and people think that I'm referring to children that are actually mine; I'm sure that all education majors have had this experience.

2. You enjoy planning lessons for them more than doing your own homework

While I was student teaching, it was so much more fun to work on and plan stuff for them than it was to do my own homework. It was more enjoyable and helped me avoid the things I actually needed to do.

3. You always have a story to tell

Children are wild. No matter what age range you teach, there is always something crazy that you don't expect to happen, and sometimes don't know how to deal with.

4. You always want to be at the school

I only went three times a week last semester, and I felt that I was really missing out on the days I wasn't there. I just wanted to spend my time teaching, and it was killer to have to take my own classes instead of being in the high school.

5. You always get excited to meet other education majors

Especially if you're a part of a small major, it's always exciting to find other education majors so that you can talk about your students and other things with someone who already somewhat understands.

6. You dream about your future classroom

I've already started collecting things because I think that they'd look cute in my classroom, even though I still have years before I get to that point.

7. You worry about the future

There are so many things to worry about: not getting licensed, not getting a job, or not liking your school.

8. Your friends know all the best stories

So maybe you forget who you told which story, or you're just thinking about a really funny one. When you start telling it, your friends fill in the rest of the story because they've heard it so many times.

9. You have to justify why you want to be a teacher

STEM majors are normally the first to question why anyone would want to be an education major; not only is it "super easy" in their eyes, but teachers get paid so little. An education major knows that there is so much more to the career than what meets the eye.

10. You can't wait to start your career

There is nothing more exciting for an education major than the thought of finally actually being a teacher. You want to go out and put some good into the world and want to be able to do it as soon as possible.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
