Siamese Twin: Creating an Anti-Basic Halloween Costume

The joy that went behind witnessing the construction of a Halloween costume that required actual thought.

Siamese Twin: Creating an Anti-Basic Halloween Costume

The anxiously awaited weekend that college kids across America have been anticipating since the day it ended last year, Halloweekend, has come and gone. When you were little, Halloween was a one night occurrence that included pillowcases of candy and a 9 p.m. curfew (9:30 p.m. if your parents were lenient). But now that you are off on your own, sorting and trading candy has become a mere memory. Halloween is no longer a two-hour stroll through the neighborhood, but a weekend long celebration of college life and freedom.

For many college girls, this freedom entails extravagant plans for costumes that require minimal fabric and are not properly executed unless they come with a tail and cat ears. In a culture where less is more in terms of the amount of clothing worn, it is refreshing and highly entertaining to see costumes that require detailed planning and the use of hardware at some point during the construction process.

One such example of a less-than-basic costume was the Siamese twin. This one may have been my personal favorite from the weekend - partly because I witnessed every stage of the costume’s production. Unlike those who began planning their costume last year, my roommate needed a last-minute costume before she hit the town. Our first stop for the invention of "Chloe and Zoey the Siamese Twins" entailed a trip to the local sex shop for a life-sized blow-up doll, followed by quick trips to Home Depot for some duct tape and the temporary Halloween costume supply tent for a wig for the doll. Only after those errands did we head home to begin the procedure.

After taping up the legs of the Zoey doll, securing her wig with a headband, and cramming her into an oversized sweater with her new twin in the other sleeve, Zoe and Chloe were ready for their first Halloween. In the end, Zoe and Chloe only received one instance of being used as a blow-up punching bag by a happily intoxicated 2 Chainz and several more instances of being caught in a too narrow doorway not constructed for Siamese twins.

Not only did the mastermind Siamese twin idea have a story behind it, but my roommate was also never lonely because she had a friend with her the whole night. So whether you decide on the Siamese twin or the Siamese cat for next year’s Halloweekend remember to use tools, be creative and go all out. Nothing says you are ready to party like a good blow up doll and a grandpa sweater.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
