This past fall season on Broadway was amazing and really groundbreaking, especially with the revolutionary musical Hamilton. Now, it is the beginning of the next half of the Broadway Tony season, which is usually filled with most of the contenders for the Tony Awards. Here is a quick guide of what to expect on the Great White Way and some mention of affordable Off-Broadway greats!
1. Waitress
This show has been anticipated for a few years now. It has an amazing composer and lyricist in Grammy winner Sara Bareilles and the direction of Tony award winner Diane Paulus. On top of that, it is the first show to have an all-female production team. It stars Tony award winner Jessie Mueller. Based on a cult classic film, this show is baked to perfection!
2. Tuck Everlasting
This is another show adapted from a movie (it's a trend this season) that has a real folk sound to the score, and it has also been buzzed about for a couple of years. Some great names in the cast (Carolee Carmello and Andrew Keenan-Bolger!!) It's a story for all ages and keeps you young forever!
3. American Psycho
Are we shocked? Another show based on a movie but this is coming from London so it has to be good right? There is a mini Next to Normal reunion in this show with Tony winner Alice Ripley and Jennifer Damiano, but it's another highly anticipated show of the spring season.
4. Fully Committed
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, returning to Broadway and playing over 40 roles! Sounds like One Man Two Guvnors all over again, but still a monumental piece of the spring season.
5. Long Day's Journey into the Night
Eugene O'Neill's classic autobiographical play starring Jessica Lange of American Horror Story. It has been a while since she has been on Broadway, along with some of the stars in the play. Check it out if you have a chance. (You also may see a familiar face at the merchandise booth)
Now some Off-Broadway gems:
6. Dear Evan Hansen
Ben Platt. Michael Grief. Pasek and Paul. ENOUGH SAID. Definitely Broadway bound.
7. The Woodsman
Hands down the best piece of non musical theatre I have seen since Curious Incident last season. You do NOT want to miss this.
8. The Robber Bridegroom
Steven Pasquale and a short fun musical, you do not want to miss!
Here are some suggestions for the spring season. Make sure you look out for them at the Tony's!
