A lot of people out there have concerns about whether or not they should actually go to college. In my personal opinion, college definitely is not the end-all, be-all.
As a courtesy to everyone, I will be answering four very popular questions about the college process and my college experience:
1. Why should I go to college?
There is no real reason as to why anybody should have to go to college. Obviously, there is this stigma that if you get your degree, you will have access to more opportunities and get paid better than someone who does not have their degree.
That is only partially true.
Everyone has access to the same opportunities. All your degree allows for you to do is get paid significantly more than someone who has not received a degree. Even then, most degrees earn more than others.
The one thing to keep in mind is that experience gets you the job you want, while a degree gets you the money you're looking for.
2. Any advice on how to choose a college/university?
Actually, my college chose me. With the GPA I had after two years of doing the bare minimum just to make it out of high school, alive, I did not think I had many choices.
I applied to 28 colleges, got accepted into 18, denied by two, and the rest I have never heard from, so I did not have much to choose from.
I actually received a full ride offer from Johnson & Wales, Miami, but I graciously turned it down to stay closer to home. The college I am at now was able to offer me more money than the others, and it allowed me to be closer to home.
Throughout the whole application process, I only took a few things into consideration:
-Who will offer me the most money?
-Which school is closer to home?
-How diverse is the campus?
But my biggest concern was just being able to get into any university.
My advice to you is to find out what is most important to you.
Do not just settle for the best offer that comes your way, financially speaking, if it does not offer you the best opportunities.
Make sure, which ever school you pick, it is somewhere you can see yourself being for four years. Do not pick just any school because you have friends that go there.
Sometimes, it is best to get a fresh start, and meet some new people.
Lastly, do not pick a school just because you do not know anyone there. It is nice to see a familiar face every once in a while.
I tried so hard to get away from the people in my high school that I ended up choosing a school that I am not very fond of.
3. If you had to select a college from the start, would you make the same choice?
Knowing what I know now, I cannot say that I would. The only reason that I would possibly choose the same college I am at now, is because of the relationships I have developed with the campus community.
There are people here I care about, and wish to continue to care about.
I've also been able to experience new things through the friendships I have developed with the people on my campus, but I would not choose this school if a gun was being held to the back of my head.
The education here is not top notch. I am teaching myself every day. I can honestly say that I have not learned anything I did not already know, in the past two years I have been here.
I am paying thousands of dollars to live in a four by four box that they call a room. Now I am appreciative because there are people in the world who do not have rooms to call their own, at all, but the living conditions are just devastating.
I would not blame the university for it; the students here do not know how to maintain the cleanliness of the community bathrooms. There are rodents and critters everywhere, but what would you expect when you literally live in the middle of the woods?
The food here is inedible.
I am paying close to a thousand dollars for a meal plan, when I do not even eat the meals. I have not had the opportunity to even gain the "Freshmen 15" because I could not eat half the food here.
I MIGHT HAVE EVEN LOST WEIGHT just from being on this campus. The meals here are just disrespectful. It is almost like the only seasoning they know how to use is Dasani.
Long story short...I would not choose this school again.
4. Is going to college worth it?
In my personal opinion, college is not for anyone.
I am only here because I aspire to work for BuzzFeed and other mainstream, social media-based companies, so I have to get my degree if I want to be taken remotely seriously by employers.
I am also here because I knew I would be at home, doing nothing better with my life had I not gone to school. I am enjoying the experience, despite all of the complaints posted above.
Going to college, in MANY cases, is not worth it.
The only reason being that the economy is not making it easy for people to further their education. I cannot afford to sit here and teach myself without my thousands of dollars worth of loans.
You go to college for four years, just to receive a piece of paper with your name on it. You spend millions of dollars over the course of those four years, just to receive a piece of paper with your name on it.
You spend close to the rest of your life in debt because of the four years you spent trying to get a piece of paper with your name on it.
You lose YEARS worth of sleep over the course of four years, just to receive a piece of paper with your name on it.
In short, college is not worth the time, money, or stress...UNLESS it is absolutely needed to help you achieve all of your goals. Other than that, I do not really recommend it.
I hope you enjoyed this honest and informative Q & A session because no one is going to be more honest with you than I just was.
