The Addams Family. “They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky,” and for that we love them. The Addams Family, originally a cartoon in the New Yorker, has been presented in a number of iterations with the most well known being the 60’s sitcom and the two movies released in the early 90’s. Any member of the loving, supportive, and remarkably strange Addams clan is worthy of emulation, but honestly, who doesn’t want to be Morticia when they grow up.
Near and dear to my heart is Morticia’s penchant for wearing all black all the time. Despite my best efforts I have not been able to reach Morticia’s level of commitment to an entirely black wardrobe…at least not yet.
She is unabashedly herself. From her inspiring fashion choices to her fondness for the macabre, she holds nothing back despite the apparent discomfort of others. And, regardless of the judgements made by others Morticia remains remarkably un-judgmental and forgiving. In fact, she is willing to forgive almost anything, except pastels.
Furthermore, she supports this fiercely independent attitude in the rest of her family as well (making it little wonder she has a daughter as awesome as Wednesday Addams). Her devotion to the people that she loves is admirable and although Morticia generally maintains a level head I have no doubt that she could kick someone’s ass if it came down to it. After all, according to the 1991 movie, she majored in spells and hexes, otherwise known as the liberal arts.
Clearly, we should all strive to be as strong, independent, loving, and supportive as Morticia. And we should all strive to wear a little more black.
P.S. As a liberal arts student who has read some of Kepler’s Harmony of the World I can assure you that the liberal arts and spells and hexes are definitely synonymous
