When it comes to college students, there seems to be one thing on everyone's mind: money. With this is mind, a lot of students choose a major that they hate (such as accounting, engineering, etc.) just so that when they graduate, they will likely get a higher paying job with that degree. Don't get me wrong: there are people who major in these areas of study that probably LOVE their majors. That is not who I'm talking to. I am talking to the ones that feel pressured to choose to major in something that is personally unfulfilling to them just to make a bigger salary after they graduate. To those people, I have to ask you one question: Is it worth it?
Personally, I struggled with this decision for a long time. I took classes that I HATED and tried to be someone I wasn't for a long time. However, one day I finally realized that if I wasn't at least enjoying what I was getting a degree to do for the rest of my life that I would never be truly happy. I needed to do something that I woke up excited to do that day. It's true that no matter what major you choose, odds are that you'll have to take at least one course that you're not too fond of. But if you dread every class you have to take, is your time and money really being spent wisely on classes that you are miserable in?
Sure, getting a good degree and making good money makes plenty of matters in life much easier to deal with. I have grasped that concept, and if you are passionate about something that other people deem boring and hard to do, then more power to you! If it is what makes your soul thrive and excites you every day, then by all means do it. However, this isn't the case for plenty of students who choose these majors.
Is it worth it to spend four years of your life struggling through a major that you hate only to get a job that you dread every day? My answer is no. If what you are doing does not feed your soul and make you feel personally fulfilled, you will always feel like there is something missing from your work life, or maybe just your life in general. I urge you all to follow your dreams and passions like there is no tomorrow. Why? It's so simple: life is incredibly too short to do anything mediocre, and that includes work. Think of how quickly your high school years (or maybe your college years) flew by. Years pass us by like lightning, and a lot of those unhappy years add up to an unhappy life. So I say this: follow the path that fulfills every part of your passions, hopes and dreams. Money will not go with you when you die, but your fulfilled soul will.
