I have always been one of the shortest in my class. Being fully grown and 4'11" is not easy, and I'm not so sure it'll get any better as I get older. So here are a few highlighted #shortgirlprobs I would like to point out:
1. People always assume we are about five years younger.
Being almost 19 is a real struggle when you get told you look 14. Last year on my flight back from Hawaii, the attendant asked if I was over 12 because I can't be sitting alone. I simply replied, "I just graduated, this is my senior trip." Of course I got an apology, but I can't even count how many times I've been told, "You'll appreciate looking younger when you're older."
2. We have been given the title of "a good arm rest."
While I am oh-so glad I can be put to good use for you, your body weight has taken a toll on my head and shoulders. They do a fine job of supporting my weight, but they don't need any extra.
3. We genuinely feel bad for always having to ask for help reaching the top shelf.
Or the middle shelf, or anything above the tip of our hands while standing on our toes. You may get annoyed having to reach for us, but you're not with us all the time. We have to climb on counters, pull up a chair and stretch our bodies to the furthest extent just to grab something that we probably had to do the same just to get it up there.
4. "Hey ____ are you sure you're tall enough?" lol
Whether it be at a theme park, or waiting in line to go down a water slide at the pool, this joke is made every single time! And trust me, it does get old. Yes, I am short, no I am not shorter than 48". Thank you for your concern though.
5. Our feet most likely don't touch the ground while sitting in an average size chair.
Trust me, while sitting through my three hour class before my eight hour shift at work, I try to be comfortable; however, it is extremely difficult to be comfortable when all you can focus on is the excruciating pain in your knees from your feet dangling.
6. Hugs are just as awkward for us as they are you.
I'm not sure if it's the fact that if I'm hugging a girl, my face goes straight into her chest, or if it's the uncomfortableness of you squeezing my head as I wrap my arms around your waist, but whatever it is, it's strange. And don't even get me started about being picked up all the time.
7. Car rides are the worst.
Okay first of all, I can barely see over the dash board, but scooting my chair back and forth does not make up for the fact that the seat belt is slitting my throat, and please, please, please, (I'm begging you), do not tell us that "they make seat belt covers for that." You don't want a squirrel-like padding rubbing against your neck while you're driving, and neither do we!
But wait, let's go back to the seat scooting. It has been warned that short people are more likely to be injured in a car accident, due to the simple fact that their seats are pushed up! Yes, closer to the dashboard/ airbag, worse the impact! Scary!
8. Clothing just fits in all the wrong places.
I'm not sure what it is, but slim to none of the places I shop have petites or clothing made for shorter girls in anything other than jeans. (Which for some reason are still too long.) That cute blouse? Ya, it goes half way down my thighs, and with my torso being so short, it just hugs in the wrong places. Cute maxi! Wish I could wear those! I gave up on that after I finally found one that was short enough for me, then it shrunk in the dryer and was too short! Guess I just can't have it my way when it comes to clothes; although, it is nice being able to fit into some children's clothes or shoes.
9. We get shoved to the back.
Here's a shocker for you, people are selfish! Yes, I said it. People simply aren't courteous enough to get out of the dang way! Concerts, school functions, a little dog walking on the sidewalk that everyone wants to see! Short people always manage to get shoved to the back.
10. Except when it comes to pictures!
As soon as it's time for a group picture, the first thing said is, "Short people in the front!"
Yes, we know, it kinda makes sense, but it does get annoying! What if I don't like my outfit or shoes that day? Shouldn't I get a say in where to stand considering it is probably going to be plastered all over the internet?
Don't get me wrong, being short has its perks.
Like having a large selection of boys to choose from, or being able to buy clothes and shoes at a discounted price because you can wear a kid's size.
Being short can be tough, but I wouldn't want it any other way!
