Shondaland, It's Time To Come Back

Dear sweet Shondaland,

Hello. It's me. And by me, I do not mean Adele.

I am a big fan of yours, Shonda Rhimes. I especially love your production company, Shondaland. I don't have one of those fan pages with Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder stuff all over it, but I do watch your shows ever Thursday. #TGIT is like a holiday to me, probably better than Christmas. Each week, my roommate and I will sit and carefully watch each episode you provide for us, soaking in every Meredith-ism, consuming the words of Olivia Pope as if they were popcorn and wine, and lying around wondering what the heck is going on with Annalise and Wes.

You see, Shonda Rhimes, you gave me a cop out. With your shows, I was able to take a break from my studies for three hours and learn from your wise ways. Your shows also gave me a really good excuse not to go downtown on Thursdays. So, I've compiled some reasons why you should bring back Shondaland new episodes sooner than later.

1. I miss you.

There. I said it. I miss you. I miss how much joy you would give me in this season of Grey's, with showing so many sides to Meredith we as an audience never knew. I miss Scandal, but I mostly miss Bellamy Young's live tweets throughout each new episode. She's the best. I miss everything about How To Get Away With Murder. I really do. I just want my imaginary fams back. I even read your new book, Shonda Rhimes, and I still miss you.

2. I am bored.

Here I am on Christmas break after a long semester, and all I want to do is reward myself with new episodes of Grey’s. But I can’t because I’ve seen every single episode of every Shondaland show. There isn’t anything that I have not watched. I now have nothing to do. Do you see my problem?

3. Life isn’t as fun without you.

Thursdays were a special day to me this semester. I combined my weekly “Treat Yo Self Thursdays” and #TGIT to make it my favorite day of the week. I looked forward to Thursdays. I anticipated Thursdays. I even looked forward to Mondays because it was three days away from a new episode. And now you aren’t here, and nothing is fun anymore.

Which is why you need to come back.

4. I need you.

I know what you are thinking, Shonda. “Quit being so dramatic! Don’t you know that none of my shows are real? You don’t need me, you simply just want me back!” Well, Shonda, that is where you are wrong. Wants, needs, needs, wants---they are all the same in the grand scheme of things, depending on the situation. In my book, I need you for my sanity and a distraction from reality. I also want you back because I like you. So, yes, I do need you. As president and CEO of the I Heart Shondaland Association Incorporated, an organization that I just made up, I am asking you to come back. The second semester is starting soon and how am I going to survive Thursdays without #TGIT?

I mean, who wouldn’t need women as great as y’all?!

5. The curiosity is killing me.

I’ve already gone one month without my #TGIT. It really has affected me emotionally. I want to know what is going on with my people’s lives. I want the inside scoop. I want to know the dealio. To you, it may just be a television show, but to me, it’s a lifestyle. My lifestyle is being cramped by your hiatus, Shonda. Please come back, the curiosity is killing me.

As you can see, February 11th is just too far away for me to wait any longer. You have had me waiting for two months now, and I don't know if I can make it another month. Please come back.

Love,

Kathryn Mitchell

President and CEO of I Heart Shondaland Association Incorporated.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
