Odyssey At Columbia University: A Letter From The Editor In Chief

Coming to college, I knew I wanted to write. I spent hours scouring the Columbia website, putting my name on numerous mailing lists, and making it my priority to find a publication in which I could express myself comfortably and freely. I was fortunate enough to find these publications, further exposing myself to the Columbia community at large while covering issues that were meaningful to me. This happened quickly and before I knew it, I was writing for two campus publications and had an editorial internship at a magazine located in downtown Manhattan. Add this to the plethora of essay due dates marked in my calendar and you come out with an average of 960 minutes of my week spent writing--let's not forget I am an English major so don't quote me on those numbers, but the sentiment is there.

I decided I needed a break. So what did I do? I accepted the position of Editor-in-Chief for Odyssey's Columbia chapter. I have made this position of my top priorities this semester and have absolutely no regrets. One of my best friends recently share a piece of advice that has been embedded in my head ever since. She said, "to get something you've never had before, you have to do something you've never done before." Have I written before? Yes. Have I edited before? Yup. Have I ever had to recruit a group of unique and brilliant writers in order to launch a publication that is unaquainted with this campus? Can't say I have.

I love sharing my voice with this community and covering issues that effect us all directly on a daily basis. However, I was attracted to Odyssey for more distinct reasons. I am now attached to a much larger network consisting of inspiring writers around the country. I am incentivized to write pieces that reach not just my fellow students, but also the general public. Odyssey has given me a platform on which I can express my opinions in a creative and more ample way. I can confidently say that Odyssey has given me the opportunity to grow as a Millennial, a leader, and of course, a correspondent.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
