The Shameless Characters Are in All of Us

Coming from the south side of Chicago, our favorite family, the Gallagher's are an eccentric and crazy family, who are all actually very relate-able.

Shameless

How on earth do our lives correlate in any way to the characters in the hit series, Shameless? The truth may surprise you; us teenagers may be more like Frank Gallagher and Sheila than we actually think. Or we are like Fiona, where we have so much on our plate but still manage to get everything done. We relate to the show & the characters in a big way. Sure, some of it may be exaggerated for television’s sake, but even so those moments pack such an emotional punch because we are able to relate to them. We know what the characters are going through because we have gone through them as well. In each and every way we all resemble a character from the humorous show Shameless.

1. Frank Gallagher

For a selfish, negligent, alcoholic man who constantly harms himself and gets into the worst situations, somehow we all have a little Frank in us. We sometimes get ourselves too deep into our troubles like Frank or sometimes we just feel like we are going to end up like him. The definition of a true addict. He drinks himself so close to death, uses people for his advantage, and is the ultimate scammer. But deep down Frank is a good old soul like us, and just as rotten as us teens sometimes are.

2. Fiona Gallagher

She resembles, the go-getter in all of us. Her dedication to her siblings, taking care of the house, and adult problems while trying to have a social life perfectly resembles us students. She, like us, is responsible when she needs to be, but also just knows that you need to let it all go sometimes, go out and be free— sometimes because we, like Fiona, are so frustrated with being responsible all the time. Fiona puts her family first no matter what, which is something all of us should do.

3. Lip Gallagher

Let's be real, what guy does not want to be Lip, and what girl does not want to date him? He is the prime example of a misunderstood kid, he is extremely smart and got screwed over too many times by his love interests. I think we as teens and young adults can relate to Lip. He is that ultimate bad boy and did I mention he is a genius? He has everything in front of him to have an amazing life, but struggles to keep his head above water sometimes, which is something we all can understand.

4. Ian Gallagher

Oh Ian. I think we all can relate to the struggles Ian goes throughout the series. He seems to always run away from his problems, and as teens, we often do that too. Ian will fight for who and what he loves; we see this through his toxic, yet adoring relationship with Mickey.

5. Kev & Vee

Don't we wish we all had neighbors like these two? Or even better, their relationship. Watching Kev and Vee's relationship gives us all hope that one day we will all be able to enjoy happiness like that. Like every relationship, they have their bumps in the road but they always get through them at the end of the day. I feel like all of us can relate to their relationship in one way or another.

6. Sheila

She might just be my favorite character. Sheila is one crazy woman, but aren't we all? Behind her mental instability, which throughout the seasons gets much better, she really cares so much about everyone. Plus, she always has a meal ready. Sometimes I feel like season one Sheila and I do not want to leave my dorm room at all; I'd rather just be in the comfort of my own home. Her eccentric and positive personality is in every one of us.

7. Carl Gallagher

Carl is a little gangsta. He has a bad boy rep and is always up to something mischievous. He really does care about his family and in a strange way, everything he does is for the ones he loves. Personally, I have the biggest crush on Carl, and I love how much his character grew from season one to now.

8. Debbie

We see Debbie go from an innocent, loving, caring child, to seeing her in her pre-teen years and struggling with self-esteem. She loves people so deeply and that's what gets her into trouble. She most definitely picked the wrong group of friends in her earlier years. But she does turn out OK for the most part. All of us at one point in our lives were a little like Debbie as much as we do not want to admit it.

The best thing about Shameless are the characters.Shameless follows each of the characters as they struggle to make ends meet in the south side of Chicago. But at the same time, the show reminds us that no matter how dark things may seem they will not always be that way and above all else it is OK to laugh, even when you think maybe you shouldn’t. We truly embody all these characters in many different ways

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
