Seven Ways To Stop The Summer Blues: Chapel Hill Edition

How many times should you really re-watch One Tree Hill?

About half way through the summer most people I know start running out of things to do. The only idea you can think of is to re-watch your favorite Netflix show four times. As much as I love a good Netflix binge, I have seven different places you might want to visit before the summer ends.

Eno Rock Quarry. The park is located in Durham and is about 30 minutes from Chapel Hill. It is a great place to go if you are looking for somewhere to cool off. It is a four-acre pond, surrounded by cliffs that you can jump into from the quarry. I recommend this to anyone looking for a short day trip when it’s too hot to do anything else.

Raleigh flea market. This is located at the state fair grounds in Raleigh. There are vendors everywhere selling their hidden gems. There are also food trucks and an indoor area with more vendors. It is all free and a great place to go if you are looking for a relaxing afternoon. There is almost always something going on in the multiple buildings surrounding the grounds, as well. For example, there are home shows, gun shows, and animal shows.

Country concert at Walnut Creek Amphitheater. There are a multitude of country artists who come to the Walnut Creek Amphitheater in Raleigh. There are still four concerts left and you can buy a lawn ticket for as little as $30. The concerts are a fun way to spend the evening and you can meet a ton of new people. To really make it worth your time, you can get there a few hours early to tailgate, because who doesn’t love a good tailgate.

Durham Bulls game. If you want an easy and inexpensive activity, try going to a Durham Bulls game in downtown Durham. Tickets are as little as $10 and you can buy them at the door. There are fireworks every Friday night and you can top off the night with some classic ballpark food.

Wrightsville Beach. If you want an all day activity, a great idea is to go to the beach. Wrightsville is the closest beach to Chapel Hill and is only about two and a half hours away.  It is nice to get away for a least a day and you can get to the beach easily. You can go kayaking, fishing, or just relax and have some drinks on the beach.

Asheboro Zoo. The zoo doesn’t have to be only for kids. The Asheboro Zoo is only an hour and 15 minutes away and is $18 for a day admission. There are all types of African and North American animals and it has over 500 acres of exhibits.

U.S. National White Water Center. If you want to have an adventurous day, head over to Charlotte to the White Water Center. Tickets range from $20 to $54, but the activities are worth the cost. The center has many things to do including kayaking, rock wall climbing, zip lines, and white water rafting. It is the training center for multiple Olympic athletes and would be really fun if you go with a bigger group.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
