Seven Reasons For Saying "Yes" To Adventures

“If happiness is the goal – and it should be, then adventure should be a priority.” –Richard Brenson

People grow up, life gets busy, and we become bored. When you feel lifeless and don’t know what to do, that’s is when you should put your phone down, turn the TV off, and go on an adventure. Adventures have many benefits not only to your physical health, but also for your emotional well-being. Here are seven reasons why you should say “yes” to adventuring.

1. Adventuring Increases Your Immune System

It has been scientifically proven that due to our obsession with sanitation, we are actually making ourselves sick. Cleanliness leads to allergies, asthma, and many more illnesses that attack your immune system. Going outside and exposing yourself to the earth, you will develop a stronger immune system. So go out and get dirty!

2. Adventures Help Grow Your Brain

Did you know that walking and hiking actually helps your brain grow. By the time that an average person reaches the middle of their lifespan, their hippocampus begins to get smaller; leading to memory loss. It was proven that individuals who traveled and walked outdoors throughout the second half of their life had higher memory retention levels and grew their hippocampi by almost two percent.

3. Adventures Keep You Mentally Sharp

When you go out and explore the world it might not always work out the way you planned. A storm might come or natural disaster might strike. When you put yourself at the risk of mother nature, you are completely unprepared for what is coming. This will help you learn to think on your feet and handle the unexpected in ways you thought were impossible.

4. You Will Meet New People

When you go out into the world, you are bound to meet people along the way. Some you just merely pass by and others you will know for the rest of your life. There are so many people out there that you have the opportunity to meet, so go out there and make a few new friends.

5. You Will Gain a Greater Appreciation For Our Earth

So many people take the beauty of the world for granted. The way that we depend on nature and the way that nature depends on us. We get so caught up in our materialistic society that we forget to just put everything down and enjoy the simplicity of the earth. There are so many beautiful thing to see and many more adventures to experience.

6. Adventures Strengthen You Inner Peace

What is better than fresh air and sunshine? The best way to clear your mind from all of the stress in your life is to go outside and preoccupy yourself in nature. When you adventure, there is no set destination and no limit to where you can go. This opens up your soul, refreshes it with new experiences, and brightens your spirit.

7. Life Is Too Short and Too Uncertain

We all hate to admit it, but our lives will eventually come to an end. Sometimes great lives end too early and too soon. Would you be satisfied with the adventures you have gone on if you passed away tomorrow? Would you have left behind a list of things to do and places to go? Even if you do live a long life and age nicely, how many adventures would you be able to reflect on? Life is too short and uncertain to not take every opportunity you have to go out and adventure. Who knows? Maybe you could find exactly what you need in life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
