Ah, the love affair between woman and her monthly shedding of her insides. I know what some of you may be thinking: how could it be a love affair? Isn’t it something that most women don’t look forward to? Well, yes and no. You see, every woman has to come to terms with this lifelong friend, so it’s all about your attitude when she comes around. I hate it because I physically feel useless (I get very low in energy) but it does at least give me a day where I literally don’t give a shit about my responsibilities. The beauty in that? I can stuff my face and watch movies. So, which movies are my definition of perfect companions on days like this? Well, here’s my top seven (so far):
1. Blue Crush
This movie has always been, to me, a female empowerment. It was one of the first movies where I saw the dynamic of being a strong woman. The main character is a bad ass but she also has flaws and while all of us do, society has always been critical of the flaws women show. Yet, this movie allows the audience to see how the flaws of a young woman make her stronger and better.
2. Burlesque
Even though my period is a time when I don’t feel incredibly sexy or my libido isn't high, this movie always reminds me the beauty in embracing your sexy, TO THE MAX. In a world where women are criticized for their sexual lives, this movie embraces the sexy and the bold. Makes me feel absolutely proud to be a sexual animal.
3.Hugo
Ahh, my inner child emerges for the rest of the list. I've cried so many times during this movie because of the adventure that it always takes me on. Most importantly, this movie is what constantly reminds me that the imagination is our greatest gift, without it, we have nothing.
4. Any Harry Potter movie
The amazing franchise that awakened the magic in millennials. Most importantly, the franchise that taught us the value of friendship, love, family, and believing in yourself. It will always hold a special place in our hearts.
5. Any Lord of the Rings movie
This trilogy actually accounts for being my favorite films of all time. If you ask me, Harry Potter or LOTR, I’ll always choose LOTR. These films literally have everything: magic, friendship, awesome battles, love, BROMANCE, and elves! I was introduced to LOTR at a very young age and I never get tired of all the major concepts this trilogy always seems to understand. By the way, Sam will always be the real hero of this story, ALWAYS.
6. The Incredibles
This movie has incredible writing and humor (see what I did there). The story is very original and shows how important it is for family to always be there for each other. It makes my heart smile.
7. Inside Out
I just watched this movie for the first time and I cried like a baby. If you’re looking for something to hit the most genuine spots in your life, it’s this gem of a movie. It’s a Pixar classic and it’s deeply moving.
I have a growing list of movies that work for these type of days. No matter what you watch on your period, just make sure it’s something that will be cathartic and will let you stuff your face!
