In college there are many classes to take, and many different professors who teach these courses. Before registering for classes, you can often assume what type of professor teachers the class you need, and make sure you’re choosing the better one. Unfortunately, sometimes you’re going to be stuck with a professor, no matter what they’re like. To prepare you for that, here are the seven different types of Professors you will most likely encounter.
The Anti-Tech Professor - This professor hates technology, and believes we should live in the olden days where we took notes with a pen and didn’t check our texts in class. Crazy right? I guess the pro of this, is that the chances of you paying less attention to your phone, and more attention to your professor. However, computers are very helpful, especially when you have a lot of notes to take down. I understand the professor’s attempt to try and get a tech-crazed generation to focus, but it’s up to us to stay on task. There's no need to take out your laser pointer and shout at me for using my phone!
The Ice Breaker Professor - Sometimes in college, you will be lucky (or unlucky) enough to get into a small class. This class will most likely have a professor that tries to make you laugh with corny jokes. This is also the professor that loves to play icebreakers on the first day of class. There's nothing more annoying than having to forcefully introduce yourself to the whole class, and having to scramble to find something funny to say.
The Chili Pepper Professor- Once in a while, you’re going to look up a name on RateMyProfessor, and you’ll find a red-hot chili pepper next to it. Naturally, you’ll be more excited for class as these professors are usually much friendlier. Even if they may not be as physically attractive as you’d expect, they’ll definitely still be your favorite because their personality makes them more interesting to pay attention to. But other times, they’re just as hot as a chili pepper!
The Blah-Blah Professor-Sometimes you’re going to encounter a professor whose voice is so monotone, five minutes into class all your hear is “blah, blah, blah.” The odd part though, if you ever find yourself at office hours, suddenly this bland professor has a personality. On the bright side though, they’re rarely the ones to call you out for having a quick snooze mid-lecture.
The One with The Accent-You’ve heard that it’s hard to understand this Professor, but you decide to take the chance anyway. And unfortunately no matter how hard you try, you just can’t understand anything. This is usually the class in which you end up teaching yourself the material. Because sometimes, reading a textbook is easier than trying to decipher every word of the lecture.
The One who Lectures you On Life- This Professor is probably a really cool person. They have a lot of life experience, and love sharing their stories in class. Although this may be an American History class, you always leave knowing more about your professor’s history—rather than America’s. Although this can make class more interesting, when it comes time for the test, there will be no personal questions. Having this professor is bittersweet, because even after attending lectures, you’re stuck trying to teach yourself the material.
The “Early Bird Gets the Worm” Professor-Throughout college you’ll encounter at least one early morning class. This will also probably be your most dreaded class. Partially because the professor will expect you to have a fully functioning brain (that had a good night’s sleep). This will most likely not be the case, as being a college student means never going to bed on time. But your professor will still try to encourage you by saying that the “the early bird gets the worm.” But deep down you know you’d rather skip the worm, and just get catch more Z’s.
Although not all Professors fall into these categories, a large amount of them do. No matter what your professor is like, there is always an opportunity to get on their good side and still do well in the class. However, your professor really can make or break your course experience, so let's hope for the best ones!
