Disney’s newest movie, "Moana," was released on November 23 and the film has been an amazing success so far at the box office. According to the Los Angeles Times, the movie is currently holding the top spot at the box office and the film’s earnings are expected to rise to upwards of $120 million. The movie, directed by Ron Clements and Don Hall, tells the unique tale of a bold young girl, Moana (Auli’i Cravalho), who has to decide whether she should listen to her father’s (Temuera Morrison) advice on providing for the island’s people or use her grandmother’s (Rachel House) inspiring tales of her island’s past as a guide. Through a journey of self-exploration and determining, Moana will figure out whether to answer the call of her people and lead them as her island’s next chief or answer the call of the sea and trust in the water and its waves to guide her to where she needs to go. The images throughout the movie beautifully paint a picture of island life and reflect the vibrant colors of the story’s ancient Pacific Island setting. The movie’s soundtrack, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’I, and Mark Mancina is captivating and entertaining, infused with an island sound. The soundtrack brings the movie’s story to life through a collection of songs dedicated to introducing characters and their pasts, telling the story of the island’s history, and helping to Moana decide which call to follow.
Moana is a courageous and determined heroine who refuses to let anything, not even the egocentric demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) keep her from following her heart. The storytells an inspiring tale for viewers young and old that beautifully continues Walt Disney’s legacy.
