There a a few life lessons that are golden and must be learned. I believe that one of those life lessons is how to serve others. As a Christian, I am called to serve people. Yet, I am finding a lot of people these days have forgotten this core value of not only religious practice, but of being a human being. Serving others teaches us so much not only about others, but also about ourselves.
This summer I had the pleasure of volunteering as an assistant coach for my previous high school's cross country team. Every weekday morning before work, I had the privilege to share my passion for my sport with about 30 teens. This volunteer "work" never once seemed like work to me. I loved every moment that I got to spend helping the head coach (who was my high school coach and is one of my favorite people in the world) with whatever she needed and pouring my love onto these kids. This opportunity that I got to have this summer has even led me to decide what I would like to do with my psychology degree-be a counselor for high school kids.
I think that service shouldn't have to feel like work. If service feels difficult to you, then the heart that you have going into it isn't proper. Service is a wonderful gift from God. It is a way to not only pour your love out on other people, but it is a way to pour your love out to God. And once in awhile, it can even lead you to some life-changing decisions.
