On Friday, January 13th Netflix gave the world the greatest luck of all time - A Series Of Unfortunate Events Season One. It is, in my opinion, the greatest thing Netflix has ever produced and elementary aged me is SCREAMING in delight watching every minute come to life. Look away if spoilers are not wanted.
For those unaware of the new Netflix show or the books it was based upon, it is called a series of unfortunate events following the Baudelaire children after their parents have perished in a suspicious fire. They are taken in by the insane Count Olaf (Played by the FANTASTIC Neil Patrick Harris) and from then on are escaping his tricks as he attempts to steal the massive fortune left behind to the eldest child Violet, who ties her hair up in ribbon whenever she is coming up with an idea. It is narrated by psyedoum author Lemeny Snicket, portrayed by Patrick Warburton (yes, Krunk from Emperors New Groove).
While honestly these events happening to Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are extremely unfortunate, you can't help but look away and get a little frustrated at how they are treated. That is precisely what draws the audience in, the fact that the sun does not come out and they have yet to figure anything out about the parents or the secret organization of which they are apart of. It's not your typical happy go lucky show, and its doing remarkably well as such.
For those who remember, there was an attempt at a movie version of A Series Of Unfortunate Events, but it did not have any attempt of the sheer volume of each book. Netflix has pulled all the stops out in the set design, the complexity of the storyline, and has even made such each book is 2 episodes long, each episode being anywhere for 40 min to an hour. The casting is even more phenomenal, with producer Neil Patrick Harris as the great Count Olaf. Jim Carey played the part in the movie, but is nowhere near the level NPH has created. In the movie, it was simply a Jim Carey character, NPH is sheer villain in the series.
With only 8 episodes in the first season and having been renewed for a second, fans can only wonder how much better it can get from there. I for one am excited to see how the series progresses, and will return to my childhood book set to renew my knowledge of the storyline.
