While some people are getting ready for their final semesters, thinking how they only have their last credits to take, I'm sitting here trying to figure out if this was the right choice for me. Coming into the last semester and I'm trying to figure if I made the right decision three years ago to be a teaching major. Who truly can tell that their decision they make years prior to graduation will the right choice? How can you tell it's going to be right or wrong? We go into the school of our choice because we think that's where we should go; thinking how exciting it is to be starting our next steps in life, but now I'm not so sure.
I didn't think of everything that would come with being a teacher. When I started school, there were no positions opening for teaching. Everyone told me that I should change my major choice then. I told them I have four years to go, that's four years left that jobs could open up. I decided to continue on a path that I've been wanting to start since I was younger. Now I look back, with this EdTPA crap that I need and all the certifications that I have and think I'm crazy.
I was told that because of my health, I shouldn't go into the field choice I wanted to. The doctors were afraid that I might work with too young of children and become even more sick that I would normally get. It's true though, as bad as that sounds, that I could become ill and not be able to finish my education. However again, I didn't listen. They thought I was crazy.
Seeing how busy I am now, my friends and family worry that I won't be able to relax. I go to student teaching, I come home if there's time for food and either run to school or work. I'm always hidden in my computer trying to write lessons or finish my certifications. I barely have time to sleep and that all I want. Sleep. I see my friends going to class at normal times and being able to work when they can. I see them relaxing during the day with little worries but then there's me, running endlessly.
Thinking back on everything, was teaching the right major to go toward? With everything that is required of me. All the needs I will have to work toward to help students. All the time I'll spend grading and loosing sleep to make sure that everything is finished for them. I know that it will be worth it... Yes, teaching is one of the hardest majors no matter what someone tells you. You don't and never have just one job, you have however many students are in your class to look over. You might have students with special needs who require other work to use. You have tests to grade all through the night, and papers to create, and projects to organize, and trips to plan...but at the end of the day, knowing that I'll have made an impact on a child's life makes all my frustration worth it. So was teaching the right major to choose four years ago, maybe not. Will I enjoy it once I'm passed all the schooling and see the smiling faces of my students in my classroom, very much. That moment will let me know it was the right choice.
