11 New Semester Resolutions You've Already Broken

1. To do all the reading for every class.

We all make this resolution. We all say in the summer that this will be the semester that we tackle the monstrous reading lists that will be handed to us during syllabus week. But then we actually get the reading lists. For the first week of classes you may actually read everything that is on the list – if you are really good you will read for the first month, but eventually you will stop. It’s not for lack of trying but for lack of time and the realization that the time you spend reading, you could spend with friends. Or Netflix.

2. To cut down on caffeine.

To be honest I didn’t even bother making this resolution this year. For those of you that did – I know you aren’t doing it anymore. My roommate said she was going to cut down to one cup of Joe a day, I believe she is on two and a half cups a day right now. Here’s the truth with this one: if we have any hope of getting any work done we have to have caffeine. So pick your poison people: energy drinks, tea, diet sodas, or the ultimate coffee.

3. To get more or less involved, depending on how involved you were before.

I did the freshman thing where I got over involved in so many different things that I would get stressed about extra-circulars. This summer I told my mom and friends multiple times that I was going to cut back this year. LOL did not do that AT ALL. I’m actually more involved on campus this year and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

4. To go to the gym everyday (be more realistic about this one people).

The gym was hopping the first few weeks of school. Now every time I go more and more machines are filling with dust. For those of you who said you would go everyday and are making it three to four times a week, be proud of that, because the people who said they would go three to four times a week have gone three to four times this whole year.

5. To not press snooze on your alarm.

I pressed snooze this morning – five times. Just set your alarm 15 minutes early and you can hit snooze all you want because chances are by the third one you will be so annoyed with your alarm that you will get up.

6. To only skip class if you are really sick.

HAHAHAHAHA you all know that you have tried justifying skipping your 8, 9, 10, and 11 a.m. classes. Don’t lie. If you haven’t done this yet you will within the next few weeks. I personally haven’t skipped yet but I have fantasized about it.

7. To not look like you rolled out of bed 5 minutes ago everyday.

Chances are you look like this because you did roll out of bed 5 minutes ago. Nobody cares what you look like when you show up to class as long as you don’t smell, college kids are pretty accepting of what you are wearing. The first week everybody tries to look good and then it becomes the leggings and giant t-shirt show.

8. To not use your phone in class.

“This is the year that I will pay attention during all of my lectures.” Said every college kid ever. Let’s be real here. Some professors are boring. Even the not boring ones have boring lectures every once in a while. During those boring times we need to entertain ourselves and doodling in the margins of your notebook will only get you so far. Thus we end up with our phones in our laps and our eyes on said lap for a solid 30 minutes.

9. To actually study at study groups.

“Hey want to meet up and study for this test?” This is code for: do you want to meet up and complain about how unprepared we are for this test? Study groups make you feel better about how much you do or do not know the material. They often become gossip groups to talk about that weird kid in the corner of the class or how the professor never explains himself clearly. Very rarely does studying ever occur in study groups.

10. To not go out on weekdays.

The rally is real. There are only four years to go out on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if you so choose). You do you.

11. To not procrastinate.

How many of you have a paper due tomorrow? You are reading this article when you should be writing that paper. That’s called procrastination people. Lucky for you this article is over and you can go write that paper.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
