The countdown is finally here! For those of us that are studying abroad this semester, moving back into our dorms won't happen until after the new year (which is a mix between excitement and sadness)! Instead, we'll be moving into a dorm or apartment or even with a host family in another county.
It's crazy to think that I'll be studying in another country, because I'll miss so many things about being on the Merrimack campus! Even though there are things that we all complain about during the year, we all miss it as soon as we leave for vacation. I have four semesters left of college, and only three of those will be spent on campus, so I have to make the best out of every second I have!
The fear of missing out on Merrimack events will be tough too. I know I'll have plenty of things happening abroad, but I'll still be SO jealous of everyone that gets to go to Merrimack's homecoming this year. Seriously, thinking through the decision to study abroad for a semester is extremely important, and you can't just rely on spontaneity.
So naturally, here's a list of pros and cons about spending a semester abroad:
CONS:
1. Being away from family and friends.
This is the hardest decision about studying abroad! Leaving family and friends will be tough but a semester goes by quickly.
2. Missing out on campus activities.
FOMO is a huge consideration, so avoiding social media may be a good idea!
3. No job while abroad.
Spending a lot more money and making a lot less money. Enough said.
PROS:
1. Making new friends from other countries.
Not only can you make friends with American students all across the country, but you'll also have the opportunity to meet other international students from all over the world!
2. Experiencing a culture different from your own.
This is most likely the only chance that you'll get to live abroad for an extended period of time so everyone should take this opportunity!
3. One of the only chances to travel.
When you are visiting one country, you have so many chances to visit others too! It's much less expensive to travel from one European country to another then it is to travel all the way from the United States to Europe. So take advantage of that!
Studying abroad is an amazing opportunity, and I believe that everyone should consider it! We're young now so forget the responsibilites for a few months and make lasting memories!
